EAGLE – To win a state title is an impressive accomplishment for any track and field athlete and coach.

For Rigby High School’s Eliza Shippen and Idaho Falls’ Katelyn Zabriskie, Friday’s career-first wins at the 5A/4A state track and field championships at Eagle High School were extra special.

Shippen cleared a personal-best 11 feet, six inches to win the 4A state pole vault title in a loaded field that came down to a tiebreaker with Emmett’s Jayden Wilkinson.

Upon clearing the winning height, the 5-foot-3 Shippen was walking tall as cheers erupted from Rigby onlookers behind the pit. The junior had plenty more reasons to smile minutes later.

Former Idaho State University standout and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Stacy Dragila, currently a volunteer coach for Rocky Mountain High School track, was present Friday to distribute the girls pole vault medals. After giving Shippen hers, the Olympian and newly crowned state champion shared a hug.

“It felt awesome,” a visibly giddy Shippen said shortly after stepping off the podium. “I had no idea she was giving the medals. I met her at YMCA (Invite) and Simplot. She’s super nice.”

Just as meaningful for Shippen was the embrace she shared with her coach and father, Troy Shippen, after learning the title was hers. The two have been a team since she started vaulting as a freshman.

“It’s been really great because he’s been there throughout my entire career and he’s the one who’s taught me everything I know,” Eliza Shippen said.

Arguably the only person more excited than Eliza was Troy Shippen, who shared the 4A boys team title and 4A boys basketball championship with his son, Austin, last season.

“It’s emotional,” he said. “I think that’s always been one of her goals – to medal at state. She performed her best today.”

Zabriskie cleared 5 feet, 4 inches to win the 5A girls high jump title earlier in the day. Watching from the infield, Idaho Falls coach Jeremy Smith let out a loud cheer and clapped when she landed in the pit. The senior paused to take in the moment before running in Smith’s direction with a smile spreading across her face.

“I was ecstatic,” Zabriskie said. “It’s been a struggle all season to clear 5-4 and I finally did it when it mattered most.”

Smith, who has coached Zabriskie since she was a seventh-grader at Taylorview, was choked up after her win. The Utah State-bound senior took second two years ago and was sixth last year.

“I’ve seen her ups and seen her downs,” Smith said. “I’ve known how hard she’s worked to win this. To see a kid reach their dream, it’s indescribable.”

Zabriskie was part of a 1-2-3 finish for District 6, as Madison’s Aleena Kugath and Skyline’s Tilar Clark joined her on the podium in second and third, respectively.

“Those girls are fabulous and they deserve those positions,” Zabriskie said.

Rigby senior Tanner Jones cleared a personal best 14-8 to win the 4A state title and complete the Trojans sweep in pole vault. Teammate Kyle Searle won the title last year.

“Right before I pushed off the pole, I looked down at the bar and knew I cleared it,” Jones said. “There’s no other feeling like it.”

Madison junior Daniel Bruton prevailed in a stacked 5A boys high jump competition, clearing a personal best 6-8 to win. Mountain View’s Kenny Webster, who entered Friday with Idaho’s top mark of 6-8, took second.

“I’m happy with it,” Bruton said. “This was the most calm I’ve ever been at a meet, ever.”

Rigby leads the 4A girls standings with 30 points to Jerome’s 28, while the Trojans boys are fourth after Day 1 with 19 points. Capital leads the 5A girls standings with 24 points while Centennial’s 46 points lead the 5A boys standings.

Elsewhere on the track at 5A/4A, Rigby freshman Elsja Mecham secured the top seed for today’s finals in the 100 hurdles, the 200 and 400 with top times in all three from Friday’s preliminaries. Mecham’s time of 14.66 in the hurdles prelims broke a 4A state meet record. Fellow freshman Tori Pinnock ran 11:39.82 for third place in the girls 3,200, which was won by Jerome’s Jasmine Nesbitt in 11:30.76.

Idaho Falls’ Shelby Jordan threw 38-5.25 for fourth in 5A girls shot put, while Macy Dye of Skyline threw 37-11.25 for sixth place.

MIDDLETON – It’s not that Olivia Redd doesn’t like people. She just doesn’t like to run with them.

Redd agrees she’s a bit of a running hermit, but in a good way.

The Sugar-Salem junior broke from the pack early in the 3,200-meter run at the small school state track and field championships Friday, cruising to a 22-second win with a time of 11:12.57 in the 3A girls final.

Redd opened a 100-meter lead by the end of Lap 2, noting later that running is about “peace and quiet” more than winning races.

“I like to start out fast because if I hear the other athletes coming, I get really nervous and scared,” Redd said. “So I like to get out front and run in my own world and tune out everyone else.”

Once she’s ahead and there’s no one else around, Redd starts talking to herself. Like a hermit.

“I really do talk to myself. I just say, ‘You can do this. Keep going. You’re tough,’” she said. “I just like to tune out and be by myself.”

Also bent on being by himself, Snake River senior James Withers was running alone in a Bingham County blizzard this past winter when he was stopped by police.

He tried to explain he was just determined to defend his 2012 3A boys state 3,200 title, which he did Friday with a 21-second win in a time of 9:24.21.

“I had to work my butt off, even harder than I ever thought I would have to, every single day – even in that blizzard,” Withers said.

Withers ran at a steady clip, finishing his first mile in 4:41 and his second in 4:43.

Sugar-Salem junior Connor Stoddard finished third in the same race, hitting the tape in 9:52.30.

Representing Butte County in the 1A girls 3,200, senior Carly Hansen finished less than two seconds behind top-seed Jaide Parke (Carey) for a runner-up medal.

Throws

One season after winning the 2A discus and shot put crowns as a Butte County junior, Jessica Bates repeated the feat in the 1A championships Friday and closes her high school career with four individual state titles.

Bates set a personal and school record in the shot put (41 feet, 4 inches), adding a near-PR in the discus at 122-4, six inches shy of her best.

Both winning throws came in Bates’ final attempts, and before each of those throws, Bates walked away from the circle for a moment of contemplation while the other competitors threw.

“I just wanted to clear my head and tell myself its been a good day, and there’s no pressure to beat anyone but myself – and I did,” Bates said.

Joining Bates on the medal stand was Leadore’s Megan Findley who finished third in the 1A shot put with a distance of 34-7.75.

District 6 athletes finished 1-2 in the 2A discus with Salmon senior Emily Taylor winning the state title at 119-0, and Firth sophomore Bailey Nelson earning silver with a 107-3.

Also from Salmon, senior Anna Schroeder claimed state gold in the shot put with a push of 35-8.75. West Jefferson senior Alli Ivie was right behind in second place (34-10.5), and Salmon senior Emily Taylor was third at 33-1.5.

North Fremont’s Caden Hyde scored eight points for the Huskies in the 2A discus finals, finishing with a toss of 155-5.

Jumps

The Firth girls dominated the 2A long jump with junior Britton Bean posting a winning leap of 17-3.5, and teammate Kayla Jensen placing second with a 16-9. Bean also placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 34-6.5, 1.25 inches back of the winning distance posted by Oakley’s Paige Cooper.

Sugar-Salem senior Nieka Gutenberger took top honors in the 3A high jump with a height of 5-2, and teammates Joe Andreason (41-2) and Ryan Hawkes (40-5) finished 2-3 in the boys triple jump.

Also claiming an individual long jump state title, Mackay senior Bailey Woodbury reached 17-2 to dust the 1A field by more than six inches.

BOISE – The Bonneville High School baseball team notched another first Friday in its quest for perfection.

The Bees roughed up Bishop Kelly ace pitcher Bowen Ogata, chasing him from the 4A state semifinals after five innings and handing the junior the first loss of his varsity career in a 10-4 victory.

The win lifts Bonneville (25-0) into the 4A state championship at 4 p.m. today at Bishop Kelly High School, where the Bees will face Skyview (18-7). The Hawks bounced Bonneville from the first round of last year’s state tournament.

A win today would earn Bonneville its first state title since 1992 and conclude a perfect season at 26-0.

“That’s why we played all year,” Bonneville coach Joldy Watts said. “That’s why we got up early. That’s why we stayed late. That’s why we took extra practice – so we could be here on this stage.”

Bishop Kelly saved its ace pitcher for a semifinal matchup with Bonneville and its ace, junior Kohl Hostert, in a battle of pretournament favorites. But the Bees showed no hesitation against Ogata, a right-handed pitcher known for his plus fastball.

“He’s a fast righty and we’ve hit fast right-handers all year,” Bonneville junior left fielder Tyson Craig said. “He’s got a great arm. But that’s what we’re good at – hitting a right-handed fastball.”

Junior designated hitter Austin Udy broke a 1-1 tie when he made Ogata pay for walking the bases loaded with a three-run double that two-hopped the wall in right-center field. Craig added to the damage in the fourth when he hit a laser out of the park above the “2010″ sign that marked the year Bishop Kelly beat Bonneville in the state title game. The three-run home run was his sixth of the year, tying him for the team lead, and Bonneville’s 23rd home run in 25 games.

Ogata exited after five innings, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on six hits while walking four and striking out seven. Three of Bonneville’s six hits off Ogata went for extra bases and five of the Bees’ nine hits went for extra bases.

“A lot of people didn’t think we could beat them,” Craig said. “We came out here and we’ve played in big games like this. It was just another game, pretty much. It didn’t feel any different than any other game this year.”

Bonneville padded its lead in the late innings, scoring a run in the sixth on a throwing error and added two in the seventh when Chance Reese and Lincoln Clayton cranked back-to-back doubles.

The Bees’ potent offense was more than enough for Hostert on the mound. The University of Oregon commit surrendered a season-high four runs and a season-high two earned runs. But he struck out seven and worked around Ogata’s solo home run in the bottom of the first – Ogata’s third at the tournament – to keep the Bees undefeated.

All that remains unchecked on Bonneville’s list is one more win today.

“We’re ready,” Udy said. “We’ve been working hard all year. We’re excited. We’re going to come to play.”

BONNEVILLE 10, BISHOP KELLY 4

BOISE – Score 13 runs in the 5A state semifinal baseball game and you’re likely to be playing for a state championship come Saturday.

Madison did just that against Coeur d’Alene at Boise’s Memorial Stadium on Friday, but the Vikings bats were also singing, pounding out 17 hits in a 20-13 win over the Bobcats.

Madison scored seven runs in the first inning and four more in the second to take an early 11-5 lead, but managed just two runs the rest of the way.

The Vikings, on the other hand, scored at least two runs in each of the seven innings, with nine of their 17 hits going for extra bases.

“I don’t think we’ve faced a better hitting team this season,” Madison coach Luke Mecham said. “You don’t see that kind of power in a high school team. You expect that from a college team, and you have to take your hats of to them. They crushed the ball.”

Trailing 14-11 in the bottom of the fifth, the Bobcats pushed two runs across to cut the CDA advantage to one. Will Evans and Cody Klingler each knocked in runs in the frame, and the Bobcats were on the cusp of tying the game with the bases loaded and two outs.

Madison senior Chase McWhorter then struck out looking on a pitch low in the zone to end the threat.

“There were a lot of highs and lows, but the kids stayed up,” Mecham said. “We didn’t help ourselves out with pitching, but the kids battled hard. It’s a tough loss.”

Josh Bollingbroke had a pair of hits and two RBIs in the loss, and teammate Shade Boice reached base four times and finished 1 for 2 with an RBI triple.

The loss drops Madison (11-13) into today’s third-place game against Highland, a team they lost to four times prior to landing in the state bracket.

Considering his team’s pride and seasoning, Mecham is confident that streak will not hit five.

“The 12 seniors on this team don’t want to go out on a bad note, and we won’t,” he said. “We’re hungry for ‘em, and we’re going to go out tomorrow and take it to them.”

The Bonneville High School tennis team will send four players into today’s semifinals of the 4A high school state championships in Boise.

Girls singles players Nacha Narumikluna and Ashlee Trane both won two matches Friday to reach the semifinals, which will be played at 8 a.m. this morning at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club. The finals are set for approximately 2 p.m.

Narumikluna, an exchange student from Thailand, beat Caldwell’s Ashley Jenacaro 6-0, 6-1 and Minico’s Eva Mollik 6-3, 6-1 to reach the semis. Trane knocked off Lexi Brodin of Twin Falls 6-1, 6-0 and Ellen postell of Moscow 6-4, 6-2 to reach the semis.

The Bonneville teammates are on the opposite side of the bracket and can’t meet until the finals.

“They were both very solid,” Bonneville coach Linda Fennern said.

Also advancing to the semifinals was the mixed doubles team of Hailey Clayton and Sean Harker. Clayton had played No. 3 singles for the Bees all season, but was tabbed to team with Harker when his partner was ruled academically ineligible. Clayton and Harker hadn’t played together all season, but won the first match 6-0, 6-3 and survived a tough second match 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semifinals.

“It really worked out,” Fennern said.

Clayton and Harker will play top-seeded Meg Matsuura and Tyler Cannon of Blackfoot in today’s semifinals.

The Bonneville girls sit in second place with 10 points, three points behind Skyview. On the boys side, Blackfoot is third with 7.5 points. Columbia leads with 9 points, Twin Falls is second with 8.5 and Bonneville is tied for 10th with 4 points.

In 5A, Idaho Falls girls singles player Madison Maloney and Hillcrest’s mixed doubles team of Curtis Calder and Lindsey Hall were the lone District players to reach the semifinals.

Calder and Hall won their matches 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 over Vallivue and 6-4, 7-5 over Madison.

Maloney rolled into the semifinals, beating Boise’s Kayla Hurst 6-1, 6-1 and Lewiston’s Josey Jagelski 6-7, 7-1, 6-2. She’ll face Eagle’s Skylar Schossberger in the semifinals.

The I.F. girls are tied for second with Boise in the team standings, two ponts behind Eagle. On the boys side, Hillcrest is tied for sixth with seven points. Boise leads with 9.5.

Blackfoot Morning News

FRUITLAND – The Snake River Panthers erupted for 10 runs over the fourth and fifth innings to avenge last season’s semifinal loss to the Kimberly Bulldogs with a 10-0 victory in the 3A high school baseball state championship semifinals Friday at Fruitland High School.

“It was nice and somewhat important to end the game in five innings to save some of our pitching, but more importantly, the bottom of our lineup did a great job of getting key hits,” Snake River coach Rich Dunn said. “The difference in the game today was (Kimberly) made some mistakes to put runners in scoring position and the bottom of our lineup went middle away, which is something that every baseball team talks about from Day 1.”

Nate Martin led off the fourth inning by reaching on a fielding miscue, then stole second moments later. After a pair of outs, it looked as if Martin was going to be left stranded on second, but a two-out single by Cole Rushton scored Martin for the 1-0 lead. A missed fly ball off the bat of Cole Hrabik extended the inning, and that was followed by a booted ball at third base to load the bases.

Adrian Castaneda then cleared the bases with a single that was misplayed by the center fielder, allowing Castaneda to advance to third base. He later scored the Panthers’ fifth run of the game on a passed ball.

All told, a pair of hits and four errors led to the uprising and the 5-0 lead.

Kimberly tried to mount a comeback in the top of the fifth, eventually loading the bases against starting pitcher Cash Cardona. Cardona settled down however, striking out two of the last three batters he faced to escape the inning without allowing a run.

The Panthers put the final nail in the coffin with five runs in the bottom of the fifth as Kade Harral and Wyatt Wray each were plunked by a pitch and Martin reached via the fifth Bulldog error of the game. A walk to Trey Albertson and a two-run single by Rushton, which was followed by a two-run double by Hrabik, and the game was called on the 10-run mercy rule.

Snake River will play for its first state baseball championship today when its meets the defending state champion Fruitland Grizzlies on the Grizzlies home field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

BOISE – Blackfoot junior Tyler Lindsay entered Friday with one varsity hit this season. His second lifted the Broncos to a 4-3 win against Minico at the 4A state high school baseball tournament.

Minico plated a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to tie the consolation contest at 3-3. Blackfoot’s Justin Mathie led off the home half of the sixth with a single. But the next two batters went down in order.

Blackfoot coach Kenny Dahle spotted Lindsay jogging in from the bullpen in left field, where he caught pitcher Dylan Mansanarez as he warmed up. He told the junior who’s played in only one varsity game all season long that he was up.

Lindsay shed his shin guards and chest protector and got in a pair of warm-up hacks before his fourth at-bat of the year. He didn’t waste any time in the box though, jumping on the first pitch he saw, an outside fastball, from Minico pitcher Shay Chandler for a pinch-hit, line-drive single to right field.

Mathie broke from second base, rounded third and scored the game-winning run standing up as Minico right fielder Skye Dansie failed to come up with the rolling ball cleanly.

“(Chandler has) been throwing fastball early and then he’d go to the breaking ball,” Lindsay noticed earlier from the dugout. “You’ve just got to get out there and hit that first fastball.”

Dahle floated the idea that the lack of advance warning may have helped Lindsay.

Lindsay disagreed.

“Oh, heck no,” he said with a smile. “I was nervous. It was not very nice.”

Lindsay’s pinch-hit single put the Broncos back on top and Dahle turned to Mansanarez to close out the victory. Skyview rocked Mansanarez in Thursday’s opening round loss, tagging him for three runs on four hits as he failed to record an out and earned the loss.

But Dahle said he didn’t hesitate to place the ball in his hands again, even after starting pitcher Russel Osborn held Minico to three runs (none earned) on five hits while striking out seven through the first six innings.

“We have all the confidence in the world with Dylan,” Dahle said. “We stuck to our game plan like we have all year. Yesterday was one of those off days where he didn’t get the job done. But today, he came in and did a heck of a job.”

Mansanarez rewarded that confidence and tossed a perfect seventh inning, earning Blackfoot (16-10) a spot in the consolation championship game against Twin Falls (21-8) at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bishop Kelly High School.

At Fruitland, Bear Lake pitcher Tyrel Anderson tossed a one-hitter of South Fremont, leading Bear Lake to a 2-0 victory in a 3A state tournament elimination game.

Anderson dominated the South Fremont lineup, striking out 14 and only allowing two sixth-inning baserunners.

Junior Gonzalez singled back up the middle in the sixth and Ryker Maupin followed by reaching on an error later in the inning. Other than that, Anderson sent every South Fremont batter back to the dugout.

“He has a pretty good fastball,” South Fremont coach Chad Hill said. “We got so geared up for fastball that anytime he threw his curveball, we chased it. And then later on, we didn’t know what to do and were taking good pitches.”

Maupin earned the loss on the mound despite a strong outing. He surrendered two runs on nine hits while striking out seven.

The loss ends South Fremont’s season with a 13-12 record after its 10th trip to the state tournament in 11 years.

Class 5A

Skyline (18-6): There are no easy draws in the 5A state softball tournament, and Skyline’s opening round date with Boise (18-7) at 11 a.m. today in Coeur d’Alene is no exception.

The Grizzlies enter state on a hot streak, winning eight straight prior to the district tournament. Four of Skyline’s six losses came to Highland.

Sluggers Rylee Jensen and Megan Smith highlight a potent young lineup for the Grizz (two seniors), and Sam Christensen and Kylee Burnside have proven capable in the pitching circle.

Class 4A

Blackfoot (21-1): With the exception of a midseason hiccup at Idaho Falls, the Broncos have been perfect.

Pitching has been at the heart of the Broncos’ run this season as Blackfoot enters today’s 11 a.m. opener against Canyon Ridge in Post Falls allowing just 1.5 runs per game.

Pitcher/infielder Jessica Capson is the lone senior on the roster, and fellow pitcher/infielder MorningRose Tobey (sophomore) has proven particularly difficult to hit.

Class 3A

Shelley: The Russets scored a trip to the state tournament in Buhl with an all-Bingham County play-in win over Snake River.

Shelley has won three straight entering today’s 9 a.m. opener against Filer, and should continue to lean heavily on sophomore Madi Ball for solid pitching and hitting work.

Shelley has a habit of making every game a shootout, averaging 7.4 runs while giving up 7.9.

Class 2A

West Jefferson (11-5-1): The Panthers again drew McCall-Donnelly to open their state tournament, the same team they drew in 2012 during their two-and-out state appearance.

The two teams open state at 11 a.m. today in Orofino, and it is the seventh state berth for West Jeff over the past eight seasons. The Panthers finished fourth in 2010, but haven’t won a state game since.
