With more than 300 athletes competing at the state track and field championships this past weekend, District 6 excellence was on display from 5A to 1A.

Due to space and time constraints, some of this excellence was left on the cutting room floor.
Today we look back on a few the unsung champions of the 2013 track season, beginning with milestones in the 5A high jump.

5A
Historic sweep: The top three spots on the 5A high jump podium were occupied by District 6 athletes: Idaho Falls senior Katelyn Zabriskie, Madison senior Aleena Kugath and Skyline junior Tilar Clark.

Upon research through IHSAA and Post Register digital archives going back to 1998, there had never been a District 6 sweep of the top three spots in 5A girls high jump.

“It’s amazing,” Idaho Falls coach Jeremy Smith said Friday. “It’s a great credit to our side of the state.”

Zabriskie is also the first Idaho Falls girl to win a state high jump title since Lisa Bishop in 2007.
Additionally, Friday was the first time both the 5A boys and girls high jump state titles were won by District 6 athletes since 2005, when Idaho Falls’ Eric Follet and Skyline’s Sydney Wendt won.

4A
Sky’s the limit for Shippen: To say Rigby’s Eliza Shippen had a once-in-a-lifetime weekend would be an understatement.

After an hour-long rain delay at Eagle High School, she won her first 4A state girls pole vault title, contributing to Rigby’s fourth girls state team title in the process.

She cleared a personal best 11 feet, 6 inches in her win, the fourth personal best of her junior season.

“It tops it all off,” Shippen said after winning her state title. “I feel like I’ve progressed and it’s nice to keep progressing at the state meet.”

She also received her gold medal from former Idaho State standout and Olympic gold medalist pole vaulter Stacy Dragila, who obliged Shippen’s request for a hug on the medal stand.

Dragila, who is now a volunteer track coach for Rocky Mountain High School, watched the pole vault finals both days of the 5A/4A meet and shared her observations with Shippen’s coach and father, Troy Shippen.

“She’s not very tall, and it helps to have the height, but she’s a competitor,” Troy Shippen said of Eliza. “Stacy Dragila said she has a plant like a boy.”

With one final varsity season remaining for Shippen, there are new goals to be fulfilled. Continuing the Shippen family tradition of success in Rigby athletics is one of her aspirations. Surpassing the school record of 11-10 is another.

“It’s actually owned by a girl who married my nephew,” Troy Shippen said of the record. “I know she’s talking about getting 13 feet, which would be an overall record. She can do it.”

3A
Snake River senior James Withers made a clean sweep of the distance events, backing up his 3,200 win Friday with an 8-second win in the 1,600 on Saturday with a 4:25.63. Sugar’s Connor Stoddard finished third in both distance races, striding out 16 of his team’s 82 championship points.

Only a sophomore for Sugar-Salem, Ryan Hawkes finished one inch short of gold in the long jump with a leap of 20-9. Hawkes later added 12 more points to the Diggers’ team total with a third in the discus (140-3) and a third in the triple jump (42-9.25).

The Sugar-Salem boys sprint medley team added 10 more points with a win (3:41.31, just 0.23 better than Teton’s second-place time.

Teton junior Thomas Knight just missed state gold in the 800 with a 2:01.40, just 0.37 behind the winning time posted by Filer’s Gage Moore.

The South Fremont girls dominated the short-sprint relays, winning the 4×200 with a time of 1:45.80, more than 4.5 seconds ahead of Snake River’s runner-up time. The Cougars also won the 4×100 in 51.07.

South Fremont senior Megan Galloway was similarly dominant in the 100 with a winning time of 12.49.

The Snake River girls took top honors in the sprint medley with a 1:55.11, and junior Scout Baldwin was second fastest in the 400 (1:01.34).

Shelley senior Deidre Wilson closed out her prep career with a 11-point weekend, finishing second in the discus (126-6) and sixth in the shot put (37-5.75).

2A
Mining silver in Ashton: The North Fremont boys finished in a three-way tie for second place in the 2A competition, sharing the silver trophy with Melba and Grangeville.

That silver trophy is the only team track trophy of any kind for NF, and sits in a trophy case in a school without a real track.

The Huskies didn’t win a single event over the weekend, making the runner-up finish a testament to team awesomeness, according to North Fremont coach Brad Lee.

“We don’t have a whole of seniors, and we’ll get a lot back for next year,” he said.

One who won’t return in 2014 is senior speedster Nathan Toenjes, who was second in the 400 (51.03) and third in the 200 (23.11).

Teammate Caden Hyde scored 12 points in the throwing events, placing second in the discus (155-5) and fifth in the shot put (46-4.75).

North Fremont senior Aldon Bishop had a runner-up finish of his own in the 1,600 with a 4:38.22.

In his final contribution to Firth High School athletics, senior Mitch Orme out-leaned Orofino’s Kyle Sullings by 0.03 to win the 200. Orme also placed second in the 100 (11.22) and third in the high jump (6-0).

On the girls side, North Fremont junior Hannah Brown had 29 of her team’s 49 points with wins in the 100 (12.39), 200 (25.68), a second in the 400 (58.95), and an eighth in the long jump (15-4.75).

“I wouldn’t be able to put those points out without my coaches pushing me,” Brown said on the Middleton High School infield. “I’m having a great time. The best of my life.”

Firth junior Britton Bean edged teammate Kayla Jensen for top honors in the long jump at 17-3.5, adding a runner-up finish in the triple jump (34.6.5).

Firth sophomore Audrey Butler cleared 5-2 in the high jump to place second, just ahead of North Fremont’s Cyrita Lee who was third at 5-0.

1A
You Cain do it: Only a sophomore, Challis runner Hannah Cain scored or had a hand in 32 of the Vikings’ 49 points, good for fourth in the team standings.

Cain won the 200 in 26.23, finished third in the 100 (12.95) and was second in the 400 (1:00.44) and 4×100 52.31.

“I pushed hard in the 400 and didn’t get that done, but I had to put that behind me and move forward,” Cain said.

Mackay senior Bailey Woodbury scored 36 of Mackay’s 46 points with wins in the 400 (59.93) and long jump (17-2), and second-place finishes in the 100 (12.73) and 200 (26.23).

Representing Mackay on the boys side, senior Adam Lambert scored silver with a time of 16.46.

Also a senior with silver, Butte County’s Dylan Coon was second in the 200 at 23.28.

Eastern Idaho’s top two girls tennis singles players finished up the 2013 season with second-place finishes at the state championship meet Saturday in Boise.

Idaho Falls High School’s Madison Maloney fell to Boise’s Bianca Mok 6-1, 6-1 in the 5A girls singles finals. Maloney placed third last year.

In 4A, Bonneville High School’s Nacha Narumikluna, an exchange student from Thailand, lost to Caldwell’s Jenny Perkins 6-1, 6-3 in the girls singles final.

“She hits the ball very flat, and very hard, and she’s really fun to watch,” Bonneville coach Linda Fennern said of Narumikluna. “She’s been a great asset to our team.”

District 6′s mixed doubles team took two of the top four spots, with Blackfoot’s Meg Matsuura and Tyler Cannon winning the title, and Bonneville’s Hailey Clayton and Sean Harker taking fourth. Matsuura/Cannon beat a team from Century 6-3, 6-2 in the title match. Clayton/Harker, who hadn’t played together before this weekend, lost their semifinal match to the Blackfoot duo, then rebounded with a consolation bracket win before falling to a team from Nampa in the third-place match.

“The fact that they got fourth was amazing,” Fennern said.

Blackfoot’s boys doubles team of Jacob Harris and Tanner Norton brought home a second-place medal after falling to a team from Columbia in the finals. Their performance helped Blackfoot to a second-place finish in the boys team race. Century won with 29 points.

Bonneville’s Ashlee Trane lost to Perkins in the girls singles semifinals, then dropped her match to Eva Molik of Minico in the consolation bracket.

The Bonneville girls finished third in the team standings with 24.5 points. Vallivue won the team title with 29.5 points and Century was second with 25.

In 5A, Hillcrest’s mixed doubles team of lost to a team from Eagle 6-0, 6-0 in the championship match to place second. Also in mixed doubles, Idaho Falls’ tandem of Alex Spruill and Sam Elsethagen topped a team from Meridian 6-4, 6-2 in the third-place match.

Boise won the 5A girls team title with 42.5 points, while Eagle was second with 33.5 and Idaho Falls took third with 28.

In the boys team race, Lewiston won with 29, followed by Boise with 27.5 and Borah with 25. Hillcrest was the top District 6 team, finishing eighth with 13 points.

The Bonneville High School tennis team will send four players into today’s semifinals of the 4A high school state championships in Boise.

Girls singles players Nacha Narumikluna and Ashlee Trane both won two matches Friday to reach the semifinals, which will be played at 8 a.m. this morning at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club. The finals are set for approximately 2 p.m.

Narumikluna, an exchange student from Thailand, beat Caldwell’s Ashley Jenacaro 6-0, 6-1 and Minico’s Eva Mollik 6-3, 6-1 to reach the semis. Trane knocked off Lexi Brodin of Twin Falls 6-1, 6-0 and Ellen postell of Moscow 6-4, 6-2 to reach the semis.

The Bonneville teammates are on the opposite side of the bracket and can’t meet until the finals.

“They were both very solid,” Bonneville coach Linda Fennern said.

Also advancing to the semifinals was the mixed doubles team of Hailey Clayton and Sean Harker. Clayton had played No. 3 singles for the Bees all season, but was tabbed to team with Harker when his partner was ruled academically ineligible. Clayton and Harker hadn’t played together all season, but won the first match 6-0, 6-3 and survived a tough second match 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semifinals.

“It really worked out,” Fennern said.

Clayton and Harker will play top-seeded Meg Matsuura and Tyler Cannon of Blackfoot in today’s semifinals.

The Bonneville girls sit in second place with 10 points, three points behind Skyview. On the boys side, Blackfoot is third with 7.5 points. Columbia leads with 9 points, Twin Falls is second with 8.5 and Bonneville is tied for 10th with 4 points.

In 5A, Idaho Falls girls singles player Madison Maloney and Hillcrest’s mixed doubles team of Curtis Calder and Lindsey Hall were the lone District players to reach the semifinals.

Calder and Hall won their matches 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 over Vallivue and 6-4, 7-5 over Madison.

Maloney rolled into the semifinals, beating Boise’s Kayla Hurst 6-1, 6-1 and Lewiston’s Josey Jagelski 6-7, 7-1, 6-2. She’ll face Eagle’s Skylar Schossberger in the semifinals.

The I.F. girls are tied for second with Boise in the team standings, two ponts behind Eagle. On the boys side, Hillcrest is tied for sixth with seven points. Boise leads with 9.5.

Blackfoot Morning News

FRUITLAND – The Snake River Panthers erupted for 10 runs over the fourth and fifth innings to avenge last season’s semifinal loss to the Kimberly Bulldogs with a 10-0 victory in the 3A high school baseball state championship semifinals Friday at Fruitland High School.

“It was nice and somewhat important to end the game in five innings to save some of our pitching, but more importantly, the bottom of our lineup did a great job of getting key hits,” Snake River coach Rich Dunn said. “The difference in the game today was (Kimberly) made some mistakes to put runners in scoring position and the bottom of our lineup went middle away, which is something that every baseball team talks about from Day 1.”

Nate Martin led off the fourth inning by reaching on a fielding miscue, then stole second moments later. After a pair of outs, it looked as if Martin was going to be left stranded on second, but a two-out single by Cole Rushton scored Martin for the 1-0 lead. A missed fly ball off the bat of Cole Hrabik extended the inning, and that was followed by a booted ball at third base to load the bases.

Adrian Castaneda then cleared the bases with a single that was misplayed by the center fielder, allowing Castaneda to advance to third base. He later scored the Panthers’ fifth run of the game on a passed ball.

All told, a pair of hits and four errors led to the uprising and the 5-0 lead.

Kimberly tried to mount a comeback in the top of the fifth, eventually loading the bases against starting pitcher Cash Cardona. Cardona settled down however, striking out two of the last three batters he faced to escape the inning without allowing a run.

The Panthers put the final nail in the coffin with five runs in the bottom of the fifth as Kade Harral and Wyatt Wray each were plunked by a pitch and Martin reached via the fifth Bulldog error of the game. A walk to Trey Albertson and a two-run single by Rushton, which was followed by a two-run double by Hrabik, and the game was called on the 10-run mercy rule.

Snake River will play for its first state baseball championship today when its meets the defending state champion Fruitland Grizzlies on the Grizzlies home field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

At Bonneville, Bear Lake overcame a late 3-0 deficit to rally for a 4-3 win over Teton in a 3A baseball state play-in game Saturday at Bonneville High School.

Three walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch sparked Bear Lake’s sixth-inning rally. Seven walks ultimately took a toll on Teton, which finishes the season 10-10.

Teton coach David Ross said the Redskins knew Bear Lake was as competitive as any team in the Mountain Rivers Conference, which needed a coin flip to break a four-way tie to determine district seeds.

“I’ve been doing this 20 years, and with this much at stake, this might’ve been one of the toughest losses I’ve been dealt,” Ross said. “I bet five of our losses were by one run. It was a disappointing way to end the season. That’s about all I can say, especially where we had them on the ropes.”

Teton’s Nathan Park went 1 for 2 with a solo home run in the second inning while Wyatt Johnson went 1 for 4 with a triple. Zach Neuhaus went 2 for 4.

BEAR LAKE 4, TETON 3
Bear Lake 000 004 0 – 4 4 1
BEAR LAKE — Leading hitters: Tyrel Anderson 1-3 (RBI), Max Lauridsen 1-3 (2 RBIs), Mitch Lauridsen 1-4, Wyatt Anderson 1-2. Pitcher: Anderson (W) 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 10 K.
TETON — Leading hitters: Zach Neuhaus 2-4, Wyatt Johnson 1-4 (3B), Colton Bleggie 1-3, Jaxon Reiley 1-3, Nathan Park 1-2 (HR). Pitchers: Johnson 5.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 7 BB, 8 K; Cole McCallum (L) 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 WP, 1 HBP, 0 BB, 2 K.

At Pocatello, Madison’s rally fell short as Highland held on Friday for a 7-5 high school baseball victory to claim its third straight 5A District 5-6 title.

Highland built a 6-0 lead entering the sixth before Madison plated five runs in the top half of the inning. Dallas Crane smacked an RBI triple and Highland committed two errors on one play to open the floodgates.

But the Rams shut the door in the seventh, bringing in ace pitcher and BYU commit Bo Burrup to record the save.

“When we started getting things going, it was too late,” Madison coach Luke Mecham said.

Will Evans went 2 for 2 to lead Madison, which was held to five hits by Highland starting pitcher Aaron Pope and Burrup.

The loss only affects seeding heading into next week’s state tournament as both teams already punched their ticket before Friday.

Highland (22-3) will face the winner of today’s state play-in game between Rocky Mountain and Lake City on Thursday at Memorial Stadium in Boise.

Madison (10-12) will face Borah (17-8), the third-place team from Boise, at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the 5A state tournament. The Bobcats are making their first trip to state since 2010.

Mecham said he’ll work his team hard in practice next week to prepare them for state.

“We just need to have some really focused, hard-working practices,” Mecham said. “We had a couple (physical errors) today, but we had some mental ones, too.”

At Pocatello, Highland High School’s Megan Reed lifted a sacrifice fly to left field Friday to break an eighth-inning tie with Skyline and secure a 12-11 victory and the Rams’ fifth straight 5A District 5-6 softball title.

The fly ball broke an 11-11 tie remaining from Thursday’s district championship game that was suspended due to darkness. The game was picked up in the seventh inning Friday.

Skyline had a play on Highland’s Kenzie Van Sickle as she scurried home. But the throw sailed high and Van Sickle touched home plate to secure the victory.

Skyline (18-6) was already guaranteed a trip to the state tournament, its first since 2008. The Grizzlies will take on Boise (18-7, the third-place team from District 3, at 11 a.m. Thursday at Ramsey Park in Coeur d’Alene in the first round of the 5A state tournament.

Skyline coach Tony Arehart said if his team can keep playing the way it has all year, they can compete for some state hardware.

“We’ve played well all year,” Arehart said. “All I count on is for them to play well.”

Both teams resumed play with scoreless seventh innings. The international tiebreaker – starting the inning with a runner on second base – went into effect in the eighth. But Highland pitcher Kali McMinn retired Skyline in order in the top of the eighth.

Mackenzie Jackman led Skyline at the plate, finishing 3 for 5 with a triple. Sierra Cottle also went 3 for 5 for the Grizz.
