The 2013 state wrestling championships get underway at 9:30 a.m. today on the floor of Holt Arena in Pocatello.

All four classifications will compete on 16 mats at the same time. Slight changes have been added to this year’s schedule, with consolation loser-out matches being wrestled at the same time as championship semifinal matches at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Some of the area teams with strong chances of bringing home state trophies wrestle in the 2A/1A and 3A classifications. Snake River qualified a contingent of 20 wrestlers for the championships – the most among area teams.

“Teton and South Fremont have a good chance as well if the kids wrestle strong,” tournament official Alan Gardner said.

The Nuclear Conference has dominated the 2A/1A competition for more than a decade. But this year, a new face leads the Nuclear Conference charge as Ririe won its first district championship in school history.

“Ririe has never won a state wrestling title,” Gardner said. “And they only have one trophy, a fourth place in 1997. I think Firth, North Fremont and Challis will also do well.”

Challis is the four-time defending 1A state champion and has also won a 2A/1A state trophy every year since becoming a 1A school in 2009.

Bonneville and Blackfoot will be in the hunt for a 4A team trophy. Bonneville snapped Blackfoot’s 14-year reign in the District 6 tournament last week.

The state meet comes just weeks after the decision by the International Olympic Committee to cancel wrestling as an Olympic sport. Madison coach Keven Glider said the future of Idaho high school wrestling still looks bright.

“It could affect things in the long run, but wrestling is still in the 2016 Olympics,” Glider said. “And we don’t know what will come from this decision until next May and September. They may vote to keep wrestling.”

Glider said high school wrestling is growing in the U.S. and this decision might never affect high school wrestling because most kids don’t go on to wrestle in college anyway.

The District 6 Board of Control confirmed that an unspecified number of Shelley High School wrestlers violated Idaho High School Activities Association rules by participating in more than the limit of 15 dates this season.

Shelley wrestlers also competed in more dates than allowed in 2011.

Wrestlers are allowed to compete in a maximum of 15 dates in a season. According to the IHSAA Rules and Regulations Manual, individuals who violate this rule will become ineligible for district and state competitions.

Individuals who wrestled more matches than allowed will have to make adjustments to their win-loss records, and wrestlers who participated in district and state competitions in either season might be required to forfeit places earned at those meets.

The consequences of Shelley’s rules violations are pending and five Russets will compete in this weekend’s state wrestling tournament.

District 6 Board of Control president Chad Williams said the board chose to discuss the violations at their next meeting and make a decision with the full board present.

“When we meet again, we’re going to make a decision on what the penalty is going to be,” Williams said.

The board will next meet May 6.

“I think it was because of a tournament they went to,” said Shelley Superintendent Bryan Jolley, who learned of the violation Feb. 12.

In similar cases around the state, the Highland girls and boys cross-country teams were disqualified from district and state competitions for the same infraction in 2011. And two Boise boys tennis players were served with the same penalty in 2011.

“Our job is to try to make sure that everybody’s following the rules and enforce it accordingly.” Williams said.

The Ririe Bulldogs captured the 2A/1A District 6 wrestling championship Thursday for the first time in school history, according to Bulldogs coach Chris Harris.

Individual champions Dakota Murdock (98 pounds) and T.J. Thacker (126) got things started for Ririe, but the team’s upper weights sealed the team title.

Kaleb Nelson (182), Kaleb Orchard (195) and Conner Caudill (220) put the meet out of reach, giving Ririe 168 points and the district championship.

“The kids went there to win it and they all stepped up and did what they were asked,” Harris said. “They set a goal and accomplished it.”

Firth was second with 156.5 points and three champions. Layton Wasia (132), Conner Montgomery (160) and Matt Lindberg (170) paced Firth with first-place finishes.

Host North Fremont and Challis tied for third with 130 points each.

The top three individuals will automatically qualify for state.

3A District 6

At Driggs, Teton won its first outright 3A District 6 wrestling championship since 2005.

Four individuals won district titles as Teton advanced 14 wrestlers to next week’s state tournament. Cade Cooke (120), Kody Hill (132), Justin Taylor (182) and Jesse Dewey (195) took home gold medals

“I feel good about how the kids wrestled and it was an advantage to wrestle in front of our home crowd,” Teton coach Richard Berry said.

Teton had a big semifinal round, putting 12 wrestlers into the finals.

“We had a lot of pin points because the kids knew pins were important and they focused on that,” Berry said. “We got ahead early on pin points and made it hard for anyone to catch us.”

South Fremont finished second and also qualified 14 individuals for state.

The top three wrestlers qualify for the state tournament.

3A District 5

Snake River defended its 3A District 5 title, scoring 259 points and qualifying an impressive 20 wrestlers for the state championships.

“I don’t know for sure, but this may be the most we have ever taken to state since I’ve been the coach,” Snake River coach Jeff Gardner said.

Snake River advanced 13 individuals to the finals and won 10 championships.

“Cutler Howell (152) and Tyrel Jensen (160) won first as JV wrestlers,” Gardner said. “And our varsity kids at those weights also qualified. This only happens once in a while where the kids start winning and the ball starts rolling and you just sit back and watch.”

The top three individuals in each weight class qualify for the state tournament.

Bonneville High School broke Blackfoot’s 14-year district tournament win streak, taking home the first-place trophy Wednesday at the 4A District 5-6 wrestling championships at Bonneville.

Always tough on their home mats, Bonneville came in with 18 seeded wrestlers and qualified an impressive 23 wrestlers for next weekend’s state championships in Pocatello.

“We had an incredible team effort from the kids, and the parents were great,” Bonneville coach Zairrick Wadsworth said. “The kids wrestled hard and it was fun to be part of this.”

Bonneville finished with five individual champions, including sophomore Carrick Smith at 285 pounds.

“I had a tough match winning in overtime 3-1,” Smith said. “He shot, so I sprawled and got the takedown with only a few seconds left. I knew it would be close, but today it was me.”

Also claiming individual titles for the Bees were Jared Bird (160 pounds), Jackson Cook (182), Jordan Vielma (195) and Spencer Moreau (220).

After 14 seasons of collecting blue trophies, Blackfoot walked away with second place in the newly combined district.

“It was a good season and the kids did well,” Blackfoot coach Thain Cashmore said. “We have a lot of young kids and a good future. Bonneville did a good job and earned it.”

Blackfoot’s individual champions were Tate Hansen (132 pounds), Tucker Leavitt (145), Ruben Pulido (152) and Bryant Sargent (170).

Rigby had a rare dual at 138 pounds, as teammates Cutler Gneiting and Blake Anderson met in the championship match. Gneiting, who wrestled at 132 pounds all season before moving up to 138 for districts, won the match.

“It was hard to cut at 132, so I decided it was best to do this for districts and state,” Gneiting said. “It worked out really good today. Blake Anderson is a good wrestler, and I was lucky enough to win.”

The top four individuals in each weight class automatically qualify for the state championships.

Skyline High School took a 45-36 5A District 5-6 high school wrestling win over rival Idaho Falls on Wednesday at Skyline.

Starting at 182 pounds, Skyline got out to a big lead before Idaho Falls came roaring back in the middle weights.

“I knew it would be close and it went pretty much according to plan,” Skyline coach Brian Ricks said. “We won the ones we thought we could and I knew we needed to get another win somewhere to make sure.”

That win came in the 285-pound match when Skyline junior Brady Skaar scored a 2-1 upset over Bard McMullen.

“I’ve only wrestled five varsity matches and that was my first win,” Skaar said.

Idaho Falls senior Julius Vasquez was one of the highlights for the Tigers, according to coach Jeff Einerson. Vasquez scored a pin at 152 pounds.

“I went in knowing it was my last dual against Skyline, so I took shots and hoped to win,” Vasquez said. “It felt great to win on their home mats.”

Madison High School’s Chase Green was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the Pocatello Duals wrestling tournament Saturday.

Wrestling at 120 pounds, Green went 8-0 with seven pins and one technical fall.

“I went in expecting to do my best, be on the offense and wrestle smart,” Green said. “I used cradles and arm bars to handle everyone.”

Teammates Richard Anau (195) and Chad Green (113) also went 8-0 in the tournament. Both wrestlers also had seven pins.

“Richard has never lost to an Idaho wrestler and he’s been here two years,” Madison coach Keven Glider said. “We are peaking at the right time and hope to continue to progress for districts and state.”

Nampa won the team title with an 8-0 record, while Sugar-Salem won five duals and had three undefeated wrestlers. Nic Arnold (152), Jade Green (132) and Garrett Wood (145) all finished with 8-0 records for the Diggers while teammate Ryker Merrill finished with one loss at 126 pounds.

“I think we learned a lot this weekend and we’re improving,” Sugar-Salem coach Bill Walker said. “I like how we competed and the leadership the kids are showing.”

Wood accomplished a rare feat by not allowing a single point to be scored against him in all eight duals.

Hillcrest’s Jaxson Landon (195) finished undefeated with Cade Williams (152) and Ky Webb (120) losing only one match each.

“We have some guys looking really good and some kids are turning the corner,” Hillcrest coach Tarl Vickers said.

North Fremont’s Kade Sessions was undefeated at 113 while Tyrel Goebel (285) was 7-1. Cooper Lenz (220) also had a good tournament, according to North Fremont coach Mat Clark.

“It was a real eye-opener to be at this level of competition,” Clark said. “We can build on this and prepare for districts and state.”

Teton coach Richard Berry’s team won four duals, including a victory over 5A Highland.

“It was a barn-burner against those Boise schools,” Berry said. “We feel good about the meet and the teams we defeated.”

Going 7-1 for Teton was Chris Hoggan at 152 pounds and Tristan Hansen at 138.

Challis Invitational: At Challis, the Ririe Bulldogs pulled off a big tournament victory, winning the 14-team varsity meet.

“Ririe wrestled a great tournament,” Challis coach John Piva said. “This was the biggest meet we’ve ever hosted as far as contestants and teams. The competition was great and we’re proud of our team.”
