MIDDLETON — Brett Hill, don’t quit your night job.

As a full-time coach and a part-time magician, Hill married the two disciplines Thursday night prior to the track and field state meet.

What followed was a sweep of the 3A girls and boys track and field titles, the latter of which was the first in the history of Sugar-Salem High School.

“Magic happens,” Hill said, barely able to speak between the emotion of the moment and the constant congratulations of opposing coaches on the Middleton High School infield. “I just wanted to show them the impossible was possible.”

To illustrate the impossible, Hill poured a cup of water into an upside-down newspaper dunce cap and dumped it on the head of Diggers’ junior Jordan Godby.

Or did he?

Godby rightly winced, but when the dunce cap was flipped over at the end of the trick, no agua. Nada.

On the track, the Diggers dominated the 20-team field, winning the girls state title by 22.5 points, and the boys by five.

In short, Sugar had no equal.

Leading the way on the girls side for the Diggers were junior Olivia Redd and senior Nieka Gutenberger.

Redd won the 800-meter run, the 1,600 and the 3,200 to score 30 of Sugar’s 93 points.

Gutenberger scored 24 of her own with a win in the high jump and medals in the 300 hurdles, triple jump and medley relay.

“For sure there were a couple of standout athletes on the girls side we can highlight, but this was a unified effort,” Hill said. “We brought seven relays to state, and all seven medaled. That’s an impressive feat.”

Though Redd rode the bus home with more points and three gold medals, Gutenberger came home with four medals.

Redd had the last laugh, however, breaking a 33-year-old record in the 1,600 with a time of 5 minutes, 6.31 seconds. The previous record of 5:08.46 was set in 1980 by Bishop Kelly’s Ellen Lyons.

Similarly impressive is the fact Sugar-Salem is the first District 6 team to sweep the boys and girls state track and field titles since Firth did the same in 2004 — on teams coached by magic man Brett Hill.

On the boys side for Sugar, senior strong man Jason Hawkes summed the Diggers’ team title with the wisdom of an upperclassman.

“You take any one of us out of this, we don’t win,” Hawkes said.

Considering every last athlete on the Sugar boys team scored at least one of the team’s 82 points, Hawkes’ knew exactly who to credit for the five-point win over Weiser — everyone.

“That’s exactly right. There’s no one kid who won this for us,” Hill said. “Every kid scored, and if you take one of them out, we probably don’t win this meet.”

Competing in a 34-team field in the 1A girls meet, Butte County’s three competitors pounded out 56 points to finish third in the 1A competition with 56 points.

Butte County senior Korbin Traughber won individual titles in the 800 and 1,600, but was happiest with the score posted by the Pirates fearsome threesome.

“For us to win that trophy with just three girls, I had no idea that could even be possible,” Traughber said.

The Firth girls closed hard to finish with 74 points and a runner-up finish, just four back of West Side’s winning total. The silver trophy was the Cougars’ top finish at state since 2006 when they also finished second.

“It’s been a while since we’ve been in the hunt for that big trophy, and it was exciting all the way,” Firth coach Stewart Portela said. “And we don’t lose a single senior, so we’ll be back.”

Mackay’s Bailey Woodbury put an exclamation point on her season, winning the 400 and the long jump, while Hannah Brown of North Fremont was a double winner in the 2A 100 and 200 events.

MIDDLETON – It’s not that Olivia Redd doesn’t like people. She just doesn’t like to run with them.

Redd agrees she’s a bit of a running hermit, but in a good way.

The Sugar-Salem junior broke from the pack early in the 3,200-meter run at the small school state track and field championships Friday, cruising to a 22-second win with a time of 11:12.57 in the 3A girls final.

Redd opened a 100-meter lead by the end of Lap 2, noting later that running is about “peace and quiet” more than winning races.

“I like to start out fast because if I hear the other athletes coming, I get really nervous and scared,” Redd said. “So I like to get out front and run in my own world and tune out everyone else.”

Once she’s ahead and there’s no one else around, Redd starts talking to herself. Like a hermit.

“I really do talk to myself. I just say, ‘You can do this. Keep going. You’re tough,’” she said. “I just like to tune out and be by myself.”

Also bent on being by himself, Snake River senior James Withers was running alone in a Bingham County blizzard this past winter when he was stopped by police.

He tried to explain he was just determined to defend his 2012 3A boys state 3,200 title, which he did Friday with a 21-second win in a time of 9:24.21.

“I had to work my butt off, even harder than I ever thought I would have to, every single day – even in that blizzard,” Withers said.

Withers ran at a steady clip, finishing his first mile in 4:41 and his second in 4:43.

Sugar-Salem junior Connor Stoddard finished third in the same race, hitting the tape in 9:52.30.

Representing Butte County in the 1A girls 3,200, senior Carly Hansen finished less than two seconds behind top-seed Jaide Parke (Carey) for a runner-up medal.

Throws

One season after winning the 2A discus and shot put crowns as a Butte County junior, Jessica Bates repeated the feat in the 1A championships Friday and closes her high school career with four individual state titles.

Bates set a personal and school record in the shot put (41 feet, 4 inches), adding a near-PR in the discus at 122-4, six inches shy of her best.

Both winning throws came in Bates’ final attempts, and before each of those throws, Bates walked away from the circle for a moment of contemplation while the other competitors threw.

“I just wanted to clear my head and tell myself its been a good day, and there’s no pressure to beat anyone but myself – and I did,” Bates said.

Joining Bates on the medal stand was Leadore’s Megan Findley who finished third in the 1A shot put with a distance of 34-7.75.

District 6 athletes finished 1-2 in the 2A discus with Salmon senior Emily Taylor winning the state title at 119-0, and Firth sophomore Bailey Nelson earning silver with a 107-3.

Also from Salmon, senior Anna Schroeder claimed state gold in the shot put with a push of 35-8.75. West Jefferson senior Alli Ivie was right behind in second place (34-10.5), and Salmon senior Emily Taylor was third at 33-1.5.

North Fremont’s Caden Hyde scored eight points for the Huskies in the 2A discus finals, finishing with a toss of 155-5.

Jumps

The Firth girls dominated the 2A long jump with junior Britton Bean posting a winning leap of 17-3.5, and teammate Kayla Jensen placing second with a 16-9. Bean also placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 34-6.5, 1.25 inches back of the winning distance posted by Oakley’s Paige Cooper.

Sugar-Salem senior Nieka Gutenberger took top honors in the 3A high jump with a height of 5-2, and teammates Joe Andreason (41-2) and Ryan Hawkes (40-5) finished 2-3 in the boys triple jump.

Also claiming an individual long jump state title, Mackay senior Bailey Woodbury reached 17-2 to dust the 1A field by more than six inches.

BOISE – Score 13 runs in the 5A state semifinal baseball game and you’re likely to be playing for a state championship come Saturday.

Madison did just that against Coeur d’Alene at Boise’s Memorial Stadium on Friday, but the Vikings bats were also singing, pounding out 17 hits in a 20-13 win over the Bobcats.

Madison scored seven runs in the first inning and four more in the second to take an early 11-5 lead, but managed just two runs the rest of the way.

The Vikings, on the other hand, scored at least two runs in each of the seven innings, with nine of their 17 hits going for extra bases.

“I don’t think we’ve faced a better hitting team this season,” Madison coach Luke Mecham said. “You don’t see that kind of power in a high school team. You expect that from a college team, and you have to take your hats of to them. They crushed the ball.”

Trailing 14-11 in the bottom of the fifth, the Bobcats pushed two runs across to cut the CDA advantage to one. Will Evans and Cody Klingler each knocked in runs in the frame, and the Bobcats were on the cusp of tying the game with the bases loaded and two outs.

Madison senior Chase McWhorter then struck out looking on a pitch low in the zone to end the threat.

“There were a lot of highs and lows, but the kids stayed up,” Mecham said. “We didn’t help ourselves out with pitching, but the kids battled hard. It’s a tough loss.”

Josh Bollingbroke had a pair of hits and two RBIs in the loss, and teammate Shade Boice reached base four times and finished 1 for 2 with an RBI triple.

The loss drops Madison (11-13) into today’s third-place game against Highland, a team they lost to four times prior to landing in the state bracket.

Considering his team’s pride and seasoning, Mecham is confident that streak will not hit five.

“The 12 seniors on this team don’t want to go out on a bad note, and we won’t,” he said. “We’re hungry for ‘em, and we’re going to go out tomorrow and take it to them.”

Class 5A

Skyline (18-6): There are no easy draws in the 5A state softball tournament, and Skyline’s opening round date with Boise (18-7) at 11 a.m. today in Coeur d’Alene is no exception.

The Grizzlies enter state on a hot streak, winning eight straight prior to the district tournament. Four of Skyline’s six losses came to Highland.

Sluggers Rylee Jensen and Megan Smith highlight a potent young lineup for the Grizz (two seniors), and Sam Christensen and Kylee Burnside have proven capable in the pitching circle.

Class 4A

Blackfoot (21-1): With the exception of a midseason hiccup at Idaho Falls, the Broncos have been perfect.

Pitching has been at the heart of the Broncos’ run this season as Blackfoot enters today’s 11 a.m. opener against Canyon Ridge in Post Falls allowing just 1.5 runs per game.

Pitcher/infielder Jessica Capson is the lone senior on the roster, and fellow pitcher/infielder MorningRose Tobey (sophomore) has proven particularly difficult to hit.

Class 3A

Shelley: The Russets scored a trip to the state tournament in Buhl with an all-Bingham County play-in win over Snake River.

Shelley has won three straight entering today’s 9 a.m. opener against Filer, and should continue to lean heavily on sophomore Madi Ball for solid pitching and hitting work.

Shelley has a habit of making every game a shootout, averaging 7.4 runs while giving up 7.9.

Class 2A

West Jefferson (11-5-1): The Panthers again drew McCall-Donnelly to open their state tournament, the same team they drew in 2012 during their two-and-out state appearance.

The two teams open state at 11 a.m. today in Orofino, and it is the seventh state berth for West Jeff over the past eight seasons. The Panthers finished fourth in 2010, but haven’t won a state game since.

The first day of spring signals different changes for different regions around Idaho.

In Boise, the first day of spring means windy golf, fog and spring skiing.

In Lewiston, it means umbrellas and soggy tennis balls.

In Driggs, it means snow shovels, snow plows and snow boards – in that order.

Because in Driggs, March is just another deep-winter month.

Which means its perfect time for softball.

When contacted about the close of the Redskins’ wrestling season March 21, it was 14 degrees in Driggs and Teton coach Richard Berry had already slid into softball mode.

The Teton High School bleachers were rolled out of the way, and his team was whipping old yellow game balls around the makeshift “infield” in the school gym.

And Berry was enthusiastic. Giddy, even.

“This is quite a group,” he said during the indoor practice. “This bunch, this bunch here has a shot.”

That “shot” he refers to is Teton’s opportunity to bring home the school’s first state softball trophy from the 3A state tournament in Buhl this weekend.

“We’ve always had pretty decent hitting teams, but we get to the state tournament and we haven’t hit,” Berry said. “This year, that’s what we’ve got to do to get a trophy – we’ve got to hit.”

Hitting hasn’t been much of a problem for the 18-1 Redskins. For that matter, neither has pitching.

In fact, Teton has won its games by an average score of 12-3 and has five players batting over .500. Teton’s only loss came on the road at Kimberly, and the Redskins enter today’s opener against Homedale on an 11-game winning streak.

That streak was fueled by some outlandish batting statistics.

Junior outfielder Sarah McCashland leads the team with 45 hits and a whopping .607 batting average. Keli Jeppson (.597), Karli Breckenridge (.596) and Kortney Hansen (.594) are right on her heels.

“In the past we’ve focused on our defense,” Berry said. “But we’re going to focus on our hitting because I think that is what wins.”

Jeppson, who also handles all of Teton’s pitching duties, has a tidy 3.01 earned run average and 115 strikeouts over 107 innings. Playing in her final season with Teton, Jeppson enters today’s opener confident hitting will result in a different outcome than the Redskins’ 2-and-out in 2012.

“We don’t see competition during districts that we do (at state),” Jeppson said. “We just need to focus and know that it’s going to be tough.”

FRUITLAND – It wasn’t the Priest River hits that sank South Fremont.

It was the walks. All 12 of them.

The Spartans capitalized on uncharacteristic wildness by the Cougars in the 3A state baseball tournament opener Thursday at Fruitland High School, blasting South Fremont 17-1 in a mercy-rule shortened game.

Priest River sent 24 batters to the plate over the first two innings and scored seven runs in each frame to take a daunting 14-0 lead. Spartans’ hitters had six total hits over the first two innings, but were walked eight times, beaned twice and helped out by three errors.

“We haven’t had that outing all year, and we picked a bad place to do it,” South Fremont coach Chad Hill said. “We came out and couldn’t seem to find the strike zone there, and it just turned into a couple ugly innings for us.”

Between them, South Fremont pitchers Mitch Greene, Zach Trost and Junior Gonzalez walked 10 Priest River hitters over the first three innings.

On the other side of the ledger, Priest River starting pitcher Dalton Summer struck out seven and allowed one hit over the first three innings.

By the end, 11 of South Fremont’s 15 outs came via strikeout and the Cougars finished with just two hits, including a face-saving RBI double by Gonzalez in the bottom of the second inning.

“We just were trying to do too much and trying too hard offensively,” Hill said. “In baseball sometimes that works against you, and I think everyone was out there trying to get a big hit and ended up chasing pitches.”

Priest River scored three more runs in the fourth inning, this time on zero hits, three walks, one hit batsman and an error.

The loss drops the 13-11 Cougars into the consolation side of the bracket and into today’s loser-out game at 1 p.m. against Bear Lake.

Despite the wholesale destruction at the hands of Priest River in their state opener, the Cougars remained upbeat after the game, and Hill remained philosophic.

“Baseball’s a good game because we get to turn around and play tomorrow and forget about this one,” he said. “We’re excited to be over here and we know we have a good opportunity to win a couple games.”

FRUITLAND – It’s not every team in the 3A state baseball tournament that has the blessing of a major league cleanup hitter.

Between the endorsement of Kansas City Royals designated hitter Billy Butler and the throwing arm of Zane Stephenson, little stood in Snake River’s way Thursday during a 7-0 win over Payette at Fruitland High School.

Butler’s contribution was simple and arrived by digital text message.

“Tell your boys to go get ‘em, and leave it all out on the field,” said Butler, who is a family friend of Panthers coach Rich Dunn.

Stephenson’s contribution, on the other hand, was dominant and arrived primarily by way of a fastball.

Christensen twirled a dynamic shutout over the Pirates, striking out 14, walking three and beaning five more to complete a day of total intimidation.

In addition, Christensen picked a Payette runner off first base to personally account for 15 of 21 outs.

“I wasn’t real accurate today and had more walks than I should have,” Christensen said. “It was frustrating, but I think I kept them off balance and my defense was backing me up.”

Christensen also took a line drive off his pitching arm in the third inning, but Dunn knew better than to retrieve his standout senior.

“If I was to tell him he was coming out, he probably would have drilled me with the next fastball,” Dunn said. “That kid is as tough of a cowboy on the bump as you’ve ever seen.”

Supporting Stephenson’s efforts was sophomore Cole Hrabik, who celebrated his first state game with a bases-clearing double in the fourth and five RBIs. Kade Harral, Nate Martin and Trey Albertson each scored two runs in the win.

“In the (score)book it will show Cole Hrabik picking up five RBIs, and from the seven spot, that’s a great X-factor,” Dunn said. “But you have to credit the people ahead of him for getting on base.”

One of those who got on base for Hrabik was Martin, who finished 3 for 4 with two runs.

One of Martin’s hits was an opposite-field liner on a pitch middle away during a 15-pitch, fourth-inning at bat that changed the game for Snake River.

But it wasn’t just any 15-pitch at bat. It was one that began 0-2 after Martin was asked to lay down a bunt.

“That’s one of those games within the game most people don’t see,” Dunn said. “That changes momentum and changes the face of the game.”

Snake River (19-2) returns to the diamond at 4 p.m. today to face Kimberly, a team that blasted Timberlake 10-0 in its opener.

Stephenson, for one, can’t wait.

“We’ve got a lot of seniors so we’re driving pretty hard for a state championship,” he said. “We didn’t come here to take second or third. We want to win it.”

SNAKE RIVER 7, PAYETTE 0
Payette 000 000 0 – 0 4 3
Snake River 003 301 x – 7 7 2
PAYETTE – Leading hitters: Clint Blackwell 2-3, Mark DeLaPena 1-2, Parks 1-3. Pitchers: C. Blackwell (L) 6 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 7 K. Parks 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.
SNAKE RIVER – Leading hitters: Kade Harral 0-2 (BB, 2 R), Nate Martin 3-4 (2B, 2 R), Trey Albertson 1-3 (2 R), Cole Hrabik 2-2 (2B, BB, 5 RBIs), Cash Cardona 1-2. Pitcher: Zane Stephenson (W) 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 14 K.

The Shelley High School boys golf team finished 15 strokes off the pace they set Monday, giving the 36-hole lead and the 3A state championship to Buhl at The Highlands Golf Course in Post Falls on Tuesday.

Sophomore standout and Shelley No. 1 Keifer Higham won the individual title with a 74-75-149, four strokes better than runner-up Reed Maggard (Homedale).

The win returns the Higham surname to the list of individual state champions after a Higham won either a girls or boys crown every season from 2003 to 2010, with the exception of 2005.

Despite putting up a big number on a par 3 in his final round, Higham kept it together on the other 17 holes to take top honors.

“It was a good, solid day for Keifer, but even he struggled and had an eight there,” Shelley coach Quinn Twiggs said. “But he was able to settle down and put up a good score.”

After battling rain and wind during Monday’s opening round, the Russets took to the course Tuesday under sunny skies and with high expectations.

“With another day on the course and with better weather conditions, we expected to shoot better,” Twiggs said. “Even the kids who shot well had bad holes here and there, and it adds up.”

Twiggs gave full credit to Buhl for taking advantage of the Russets’ slide, though he said from the team bus that his boys were disappointed with their hard-luck finish.

“You can say ‘that’s just golf’ or ‘that’s just sports,’ but we’re pretty disappointed,” he said.

In the 3A girls field, Snake River’s Hannah Murdock wrapped up with an 81-95-176 on The Highlands layout in Post Falls, finishing fifth overall.

Shelley’s Hannah Howard also cracked the top 10, finishing 10th with a 101-93-194. With Howard leading the way, the Lady Russets finished fifth with a team stroke count of 845. Kellogg won the 3A girls title with a 716.

Class 2A

Trailing by five with five holes to play at Circling Raven Golf Course in Worley, Ririe junior Tristen Coles rallied to defend his 2A boys individual crown Tuesday, draining an 8-foot par putt on 18 to edge Melba’s Caden Cook by one stroke.

Cook, who previously played for Hillcrest, carded a field-low 74 on Day 2, but so did Coles, finishing birdie-par for a steady 37-37-74 and a 36-hole total of 155.

Coles came into Tuesday’s round with a plan to control the ball off the tee on the narrow Circling Raven layout, a plan that kept him out of trouble on his way to the state title.

“He stayed patient, had a plan on how to play the course, and stuck with it,” Ririe coach Jake Landon said. “No driver. The head (cover) never came off all day. Just 3-woods and irons off the tee. It was awesome.”

Salmon’s Jade Barney was the leader after an opening-round 75, but he tumbled to fifth place with a tough 89 on Day 2. Salmon fell from third place in the team standings to sixth with a stroke count of 748. Nampa Christian won the team title with a 708.

On the girls side at Circling Raven, Salmon finished seventh with a team stroke count of 1,081, led by Bailey Hilton’s 36-hole total of 238. Aberdeen won the girls state 2A title with an 852.

Class 5A

Skyline senior and William Penn commit Alexi Rule fired an 85 to back up her opening-day 87 at the Lewiston Country Club, cracking the top 10 with a 10th-place finish in the 5A girls championship.

Teammate Brooklyn Anderson finished 12th with a 176, and Idaho Falls’ Yedin Lui (175), and Hadley Hersh (179) placed 11th and 13th, respectively.

Rocky Mountain ran away with the girls 5A title with a team score of 667, 23 better than Lewiston’s runner-up number. Idaho Falls was fifth at 764 and Skyline was sixth at 774.

On the boys side of the 5A championship, Hillcrest posted eastern Idaho’s top finish with a 642, good for sixth. Skyline finished in a tie for eighth with Capital at 690.

Hillcrest freshman Andy Hess was District 6′s low finisher in 12th place with a 150, followed by teammates Spencer Bishop and Carson Biddulph, who each placed 17th with 158s.

Skyline’s Stockton Murdoch led the Grizzlies charge, finishing 22nd with a 159.

Eagle won the boys team title with a total of 574.

Class 4A

The Rigby boys cut 20 strokes off their Day 1 score at the University of Idaho Golf Course, posting a 342 Tuesday to finish in eighth place. No. 1 Hayden Livingston shot a team-best 82, and No. 5 Nick Buckway improved by 11 strokes over Day 1 to fire an 86.

Twin falls won the 4A state team title by six strokes over Bishop Kelly with a 619.

Playing as an individual in the 4A girls field Tuesday, Bonneville’s Taylor Larsen posted another 86 to finish 86-86-172 and finish sixth overall.

Bishop Kelly won the girls team title in 4A, running away from the field with a 682. Twin Falls finished 52 strokes back in second.

The Shelley High School boys golf team opened up a nine-stroke lead on the opening day of the 3A state golf championships in Post Falls as Keifer Higham and Jason Hathaway shot matching 74s.

Tyler Fredrickson also broke 80 with a 79 on the narrow Highlands Golf Course layout, leaving the Russets with the advantage entering today’s final round.

“We feel good about it, and we and Buhl and Filer have good shots, and we’ll have to play well again to keep our lead,” Shelley coach Quinn Twiggs said. “We’ll have to play again tomorrow to keep our lead.”

Players battled rainy weather throughout Monday’s opening round, though coach Twiggs credited his team’s Monday success in part due to its ability to play in difficult weather.

“They all got wet, and it got pretty tough there toward the end,” Twiggs said. “There are a lot of trees and it’s narrow, so you have to keep it in the fairway or you’re in trouble.”

Shelley shot 313 as a team Monday, putting the Russets nine strokes ahead of Buhl and 12 ahead of Filer.

On the girls side of the 3A state tournament in Post Falls, Shelley girls finished Day 1 in fourth place with a stroke count of 421, well back of Kellogg’s opening round 347.

Class 5A

The Eagle boys jumped out to a decisive early lead at the Lewiston Country Club on Monday, posting a 290 to take a 15-stroke lead over Lewiston into today’s final round.

No Mustangs player shot worse than 73 over the championship’s opening 18 holes, and three of the top five players were wearing Eagle green.

The Hillcrest boys were 30 strokes back of Eagle in sixth place, led by freshman Andy Hess, who carded a 74.

The Skyline boys were 34 strokes further back at 354, with Stockton Murdoch’s 78 leading the way.

On the girls side in Lewiston, Rocky Mountain opened with a 334, 50 strokes better than Idaho Falls’ fifth-place total and 65 ahead of Skyline’s sixth-place showing.

Skyline senior Alexi Rule led the Grizz with an 87, and Idaho Falls freshman Hadley Hersh paced the Tigers with a 90.

Class 4A

The Rigby boys sit in eighth place following the opening 18 on the University of Idaho Golf Course in Moscow, led by a tidy 83 from Hayden Livingston.

Led by Emma Pettingill’s 97, the Rigby girls are in fourth place following an opening-round 402, 58 back of Bishop Kelly’s leading number.

Class 2A

Salmon’s Jade Barney was little affected by the rain and wind at Circling Raven Golf Course in Worley, carding a 75 during Monday’s opening round to lead the field by six strokes.

Salmon finished Day 1 in third place, 16 strokes back of Nampa Christian in the team competition, and one behind Valley.

Defending 2A state medalist Tristen Coles sat in second-place after an opening-round 81, one of just 14 in the 55-player field to break 90 under difficult conditions.

On the girls side in Worley, Salmon opened with a 556 and sits in seventh place with its four-player squad, led by Bailey Hilton’s 118.

Aberdeen leads the girls field with a 427, one better than McCall-Donnelly.

They say the team that vaults together exalts together, and the Madison pole vaulting team is no exception.

With a 1-2 finish in the event at the 5A District 5-6 Track and Field Championships on Friday, senior teammates Chase Wightman and Ben Hansen each qualified for next week’s state championships.

Soon thereafter, the pair will ditch their poles and fly together to South Africa to study at the LDS Missionary Training Center.

But before they trade their tank tops for suit coats, Wightman and Hansen have some business at state.

“We’ve been vaulting for the last four years together, and he’s the best guy in the world,” Wightman said after winning with a height of 13 feet, 6 inches. “There’s good competition in 5A with a lot of guys up at 14-6, so it should be fun.”

Wightman set a personal record with a winning vault of 14-7 at the Tiger/Grizz Invitational, and is among the favorites to medal at state. Hansen cleared 12-6 to place second in windy conditions.

In his final attempt at 14-6, Wightman’s right knee kicked out. By the time he reached the top of his vault, Wightman had sailed right of the pit and fell to earth from over 14 feet with a sickening “whump”.

Wightman lay on the ground for 90 seconds before pulling himself to his hands and knees and standing – with some help.

Two hours and one sore neck later, Wightman was back at it, running his legs in Madison’s 4×100-meter and 4×400 relays, apparently no worse for wear.

“I remember seeing the standards right there and then I remember seeing the ground,” Wightman said of the fall. “I knew I hit hard, and then everything went black. I should be fine at state, if I can recover from this whiplash.”

With wins or runner-up finishes in seven of eight speed events, the Idaho Falls boys team sped to its third consecutive 5A District 5-6 track and field title.

The Tigers won the 100-meter, 200, 400, 300 hurdles, 4×100 and 4×200 in an overwhelming display of fleet feet, cruising to the district crown with 111 points, 35 better than Madison’s runner-up total.

Idaho Falls coach Jeremy Smith was all smiles following the meet, and gave credit – speedily – to his athletes and assistant coaches.

“(Sprint coach) Erik Strom has a great relationship with the kids, works hard and loves his job,” Smith said. “These kids rise to the occasion, and we are lucky to have willing kids and parents who support them.”

One of those willing kids was Idaho Falls sophomore Bryce Frazee, who won the 100 (11.08 seconds) and 200 (22.52), and picked up a third medal as part of Idaho Falls’ winning 4×100 team (43.80).

Those wins were part of 32 state-qualifying berths for the Tigers, a number that came as no surprise to coach Smith.

“Honestly, I think winning begets winning, and it’s become an expectation at Idaho Falls,” Smith said.

The expectation carries over to the Idaho Falls girls team, with junior Kai Amos and senior Micaila Minnix helping to account for 38 of the Tigers 89.5 points. I.F. finished second in the team standings, 21.5 behind Madison.

“Our sprinters are amazing, both boys and girls,” Amos said. “We’re like a family, honestly.”

And like any family, personalities either fit or fail. In the case of Minnix and Amos, it’s a fit.

“Without her I will slack off in practice because I’m really lazy, but Kai is there to push me,” Minnix said. “With the relays, it’s a lot of fun because we get along so well and keep each other up.”
