For the last three years, the Idaho Falls-Ammon area has been wiping its football cleats all over the Hillcrest Knights.
Now it’s the Knights’ turn to clean their cleats.
The Knights completed a “City-Sweep” on Friday night with a 60-21 shellacking of the Skyline Grizzlies at Ravsten Stadium.
“The biggest thing that I wanted the kids to know is that if they can win these games here in the city … throughout the year they can go through the city and know that they had a good season,” Hillcrest head coach Darin Owens said.

Though Skyline played the Hillcrest defense tough, the Grizzlies’ defense got in front of the Knights’ offensive freight-train at the wrong time. Junior running back Devin Droghei led the train with 226 yards on 21 carries and four touchdowns. The next train to come through the station was Jordan Speirs, who ran for 194 yards on 22 carries and one touchdown.
“We had huge holes. All we had to do is burn through them, our line gave us big holes,” Droghei said.
The Skyline defense started out strong against Hillcrest’s tight, powerful running game, forcing a Hillcrest turnover on the Knights’ first drive. Down 20-7 at the half, the Grizzlies still had a good chance of coming back and stealing away their homecoming game. But the Knights came out even stronger on offense in the second half, converting each of their six offensive possessions into touchdowns.
“Basically (we wanted) to chew up the clock and have long, methodical drives, and make sure that we finish off with a score,” Owens said. “I thought it would be a shootout and the kids responded pretty well tonight.”
Skyline rallied in the second half behind quarterback Michael Berger and tailbacks Max Asay and Michael Glaser. After a 10-yard Asay touchdown run, a recovered onside kick, and a Berger-to-Asay touchdown pass, the Grizzlies pulled the score to 46-21 in the fourth quarter. Asay finished with 99 yards rushing and two touchdowns while Glaser ran for 115 yards.

But as if it wasn’t already too late to come back, the Knights scored twice more to add insult to annihilation.
Before this season, Hillcrest hadn’t beat a city opponent since the Civil War of 2005, and that was the Knights’ only city-win that year. For the 2008 season, the Knights have gone undefeated against the opponents they see around town the most, and have racked up an enormous 133 point total vs. city-foes.
“It feels great,” Droghei said. “We made the biggest turnaround, I don’t think anyone suspected it. I love it.”
Jake Belnap also ran for 117 yards.

The 17th meeting of Bonneville and Hillcrest is about to get under way.

Tonight’s matchup looks to be the best in years after Hillcrest snapped its 23-game losing streak last week and it looks like a real contender in the High Country Conference.

Besides a clash of district mates, the game is also a showcase of contrasting styles – Bonneville’s spread option and Hillcrest’s double wing.

So check back here throughout the game for updates.

First quarter

:45 – After two fumbles from each team, Bonneville’s Jared Richardson opens the scoring by dragging a pile 5 yards up the middle. Jason Struhs’ kick misses. Bonn 6-0

Second quarter

7:31 – Hillcrest’s Devin Droghei tries to run left, bounces off the back of his own blocker and finds a hole up the middle for a 3-yard TD run. Leighton Murri’s kick is good. Hillcrest 7-6.

At halftime:

This has been a game of offensive miscues on both sides. Bonneville fumbled on its first two drives, and Hillcrest handed one back two plays later with a Jordan Speirs fumble, one of his two. Hillcrest had a third fumble in the first quarter but recovered it. The second quarter was a lot cleaner, fumble wise, but didn’t result in much more offense.

Here’s your halftime stats:

Team
Score – Hillcrest leads 7-6
First downs – Bonn 13, Hillcrest 7
Total yards – Bonn 156, Hillcrest 139
Rushing yards – Bonn 81, Hillcrest 124
Passing yards – Bonn 75, Hillcrest 15
Turnovers – Bonn 2, Hillcrest 2
Penalties – Bonn 3/17, Hillcrest 6/53

Individual
Parker Buck, Bonn – 6-for-17, 75 yards; 19 carries, 63 yards
Jason Struhs, Bonn – 3 rec, 50 yards
Jared Richardson, Bonn – 3 carries, 9 yards, 1 TD

Jake Belnap, Hillcrest – 8 carries, 59 yards
Jordan Speirs, Hillcrest – 10 carries, 44 yards
Devin Droghei, Hillcrest – 10 carries, 22 yards, 1 TD

Third quarter

8:44 – Bonneville’s Jared Richardson scores on fourth-and-goal from the one, but it’s called back due to a false start. Bonneville goes for it on fourth-and-six, but Hillcrest stops Richardson at the one-yard line.

8:37 – On the very next play, Hillcrest quarterback Matt Astel keeps the option handoff – one of the few times all year he has done that – and runs 99 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. An excessive celebration penalty pushes Hillcrest back to the 18 and Murri misses the extra point. Hillcrest 13-6.

4:49 – Bonneville’s Parker Buck a handoff to Richardson on third-and-three to bust a 14-yard TD run to the left side. That same play worked earlier on the drive on fourth-and-one in Bonneville’s own territory because Hillcrest has to respect Richardson in short-yardage situation. Buck fumbles the two-point snap. Hillcrest 13, Bonneville 12

:35 – On fourth-and-one, Hillcrest tries a fake field goal. The holder shovels it to Droghei, but Richardson, who a few plays earlier had to come out of the game with an injury, stuffs it and forces a turnover on downs.

Fourth quarter
10:44 – Bonneville’s ensuing possession goes nowhere and Buck is forced to punt. But the snap is bad and the punt is blocked. Hillcrest’s Jake Belnap scrambles 32 yards for a TD. Run fails. Hillcrest 19, Bonneville 12

6:50 – Droghei rushes two yards to put Hillcrest up even further. Murri’s kick is good. Hillcrest 26, Bonneville 12

5:15 – Bonneville’s Brandon Craig hits Jason Struhs for an 11-yard TD pass and a two-point conversion. Hillcrest 26, Bonneville 20

1:53 – Droghei rushes for a 1-yard TD. Speirs runs for two-point conversion. The drive was set up by an unsuccessful Bonneville onside kick. Hillcrest 34, Bonneville 20

1:37 – Hillcrest Chase Howell picks off a Craig pass, sealing the win.

HILLCREST WINS 34-20
