After originally committing to play baseball in Utah, Hillcrest’s Austin Shirley will instead be heading west to continue his career.

With help from Hillcrest head baseball coach Brian DeLaney, Shirley earned an invited walk-on spot at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Ore. Shirley signed to play for the Timberwolves last Wednesday.

“My coach (Brian DeLaney) knows the coach (Brad Baker) up there and I decided to take a visit there,” Shirley said by phone Wednesday. “I think it’s a good fit for me and my best option.”

Shirley will play outfield and pitch for the Timberwolves. He said he enjoyed the small town feel of Pendleton.

“Their head coach, it’s a small town, the field was really nice there, nice training center, the whole baseball facility,” Shirley said of what attracted him to Blue Mountain Community College. “It’s a nice little campus.”

A member of Hillcrest’s team which finished 12-13 this previous spring, Shirley batted .213 in 22 games played. He had seven RBIs, three doubles and one triple, per the team’s MaxPreps account. Shirley went 1-0 in three appearances on the mound with a 3.89 ERA.

“It’s been great,” Shirley said of his time at Hillcrest. “(Retired Hillcrest head baseball coach) Scott Barr has helped me with a lot, and coach DeLaney has helped me get looked at by a lot of schools. It’s been a good experience.”
