Cannon Thompson and the Idaho Falls Tigers have ambitions to win the 4A state tournament.

South Fremont may have the offense to win 3A. And Bonneville, which has one of the state’s best pitchers, will try to survive an opening round matchup with Mountain View.

Seven local teams all with the same goal. Here’s how every local baseball team stacks up this weekend.


Team: Bonneville (22-5)

Opponent: Mountain View (20-6)

When/where: 1 p.m. today at Borah High School

Notes: Bonneville enters the state tournament on a 14-game winning streak. … Bonneville ace Randon Hostert’s pitching stats, according to MaxPreps: 5-0, 0.31 ERA, 44.1 IP, 72 K, .088 OBA, 1 SV. … The only Idaho team to beat Bonneville in 2018: Rigby (April 5). … Bonneville (1st on Idaho Sports’ power rankings) versus Mountain View (third) is the only opening round matchup that pits two top-five ranked teams. … The Bees are 1-3 when playing on a neutral site in 2018. They are 10-3 on the road. … Caden Christensen is the team’s leading batter: 42 hits on 88 at-bats (.477). Tavyn Lords and Christensen both have 29 RBIs this season. Hostert has 41. … The Bees have pitched five shut outs.


Teams: Idaho Falls (20-6), Blackfoot (16-13)

Opponents: Idaho Falls plays Minico (22-5), Blackfoot plays Skyview (17-8)

When/where: Blackfoot plays today at 1 p.m. while Idaho Falls plays tonight at 7 p.m. Both games are at Melaleuca Field.

Notes (Idaho Falls): The Tigers have outscored opponents 227-120 and enter the 4A state tournament on a three-game winning streak. … Idaho Falls is 9-3 when playing at Melaleuca Field. … The last 4A school to beat Idaho Falls: Skyline (April 20). … The Tigers have produced 190 RBIs on 230 hits this spring. … Andrew Gregersen and Cannon Thompson lead Idaho Falls offensively. Gregersen is 33-77 (.429) at the plate. Thompson is 32-87 (.368). Other notable hitters include Dillon Lenon (27-70, .386), Braxton Ball (26-74, .351) and Jaxon Sorenson (22-58, .379). … Ace Logan Ferguson is 6-0 on the season with a 2.09 ERA.

Notes (Blackfoot): Blackfoot has outscored opponents 152-117. … The Broncos are 6-9 on the road. … This is Blackfoot’s first trip to the 4A state baseball tournament since 2016. … Joe Maddox is Blackfoot’s leading hitter: 31-91 (.341) with 16 RBIs and eight doubles. … Payson Mills, Blackfoot’s ace, is 6-3 on the season with a 2.88 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 48.2 IP. … Blackfoot has a .946 fielding percentage.


Teams: Teton (12-4), South Fremont (24-2)

Opponents: Teton plays Kimberly (16-4-1), South Fremont plays Homedale (22-4)

When/where: Teton plays today at 10 a.m. while South Fremont plays tonight at 7 p.m. Both games are at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore.

Notes (Teton): Teton has outscored opponents 168-83 in 16 games this season. … This spring is Teton’s second consecutive trip to the 3A state tournament. … Teton is the only 3A District 5-6 team to beat South Fremont. … The Redskins have six sophomores on their team, including Parker Bleggi and Carson Reiley. … Teton is 5-2 on the road and 3-0 at neutral sites. … Teton beat Kimberly in last year’s 3A consolation bracket, 7-6.

Notes (South Fremont): This is South Fremont’s first trip to the 3A state tournament since 2016. The Cougars have lost two straight. … The Cougars have outscored opponents 273-83 this spring. … The Cougars have hit 16 home runs in 2018. … Both Kyler and Reece Yancey have registered 40 hits this season. Reece Yancey is batting .500 (40-80) and Kyler is batting a .519. … The Cougars have committed 38 errors in 26 games and have made 28 double plays. … Alonzo Gonzalez (6-1) has a 1.71 ERA and has five saves. Carson Hanson has a 2.31 ERA and a team-high six saves.


Teams: Firth (14-9), Challis-Mackay (11-4)

Opponents: Firth plays Cole Valley Christian (16-10), Challis-Mackay plays Nampa Christian (14-8)

When/where: Firth plays today at noon. Challis-Mackay plays tonight at 5 p.m. Both games are at Nampa Christian High School.

Notes (Firth): This is Firth’s first postseason since 2016. … Firth is 3-2 on the road and 3-3 at neutral sites. … Ben Park leads the team in innings pitched (41.2) and total pitches (800). He has made 11 appearances on the mound this spring. … Firth has won 10 in a row. … Firth has outscored its previous five opponents, 62-13.

Notes (Challis-Mackay): This is Challis-Mackay’s second straight postseason appearance in four seasons as a program … Challis-Mackay’s batting average is .371 and average 3.66 earned runs a game. … Sophomore Austin Ollar leads the teams with 26 hits (.542)/ Mitch Cotant has 25 hits (.463). … Chris Ivie leads the team in home runs with two. … Garrett Millick leads the team in RBIs (22) and wins (4). … Ollar has 47 strikeouts in 27.1 IP.
