Blackfoot blanks Skyline, March 27 baseball round up

BLACKFOOT 5, SKYLINE 0: At Blackfoot, Payson Mills was solid on the mound as the Broncos held the Grizzlies scoreless and with just one hit.

Mills went the distance, allowing just one hit, three walks and eight strike outs in seven innings pitched. Carlos Pimentel, Cayden Cornell and Joseph Maddox all finished 2 for 3 at the plate. Blackfoot finished with eight hits.

“Payson pitched very well,” Blackfoot coach Liam Pope said. “That’s the basis there. Emerson called a good game behind the plate. We didn’t have a lot of hits, but they were good hits at the right time.”

Tim Orgill had Skyline’s only hit Tuesday.

Blackfoot (3-1, 1-1) is scheduled to play Mountain Home on Thursday to begin the Bucks Bags Tournament while Skyline (0-2, 0-1) begins the tournament against Middleton the same day.

HILLCREST 8, IDAHO FALLS 2: At Idaho Falls, Hillcrest strung together some solid offense to down the Tigers on the road.

Led by Koby Sorensen and Luke Patterson’s two hits, the Knights did all their damage in the final five innings played.

“They played really well today,” Idaho Falls coach Pat Lloyd said. “They did all the little things right: hit, run, squeeze and we didn’t today.”

Idaho Falls had three hits from Dillon Lenon, Logan Ferguson and Cannon Thompson.

Hillcrest plays Bonneville in a doubleheader Thursday. Idaho Falls (2-3) plays Friday at Preston.

MARSH VALLEY 18, SHELLEY 2 (5 INNINGS): At Shelley, the Russets fell to Marsh Valley in five innings in a nonconference loss.

The Eagles, who led 9-2 through three innings, broke the game open with eight runs in the fourth inning. Marsh Valley outhit Shelley 10-2 and committed no errors to Shelley’s eight.

Peyton Whitaker went 1 for 1 wit ha double, an RBI and a run scored for Shelley (0-1), which hosts Malad today.

SUGAR-SALEM 10, WEST JEFFERSON 0 (6): At Sugar City, Diggers pitchers Caleb Norman and Mason Balzen combined for a no-hitter and 12 strikeouts to blank West Jefferson.

Norman struck out eight batters and walked three in three innings pitched. Balzen struck out four in three innings of work.

Norman went 3 for 4 at the plate for two runs and one RBI.

Grady Rasmussen and Curtis Drake went 2 for 4 at the plate for two RBIs and two runs, respectively.West Jefferson committed seven errors.

Sugar-Salem hosts Firth today. West Jefferson hosts Malad Thursday.

SOUTH FREMONT 10, SNAKE RIVER 7: At Moreland, South Fremont had a solid seventh inning to rally for the nonconference win over Snake River.

The Cougars led 2-0 through three innings before Snake River snatched a 7-6 lead in the fifth inning. South Fremont responded with four unanswered runs, including three in the seventh.

“We had some big hits by Carson Crapo and Garrett Tuckett there,” South Fremont coach Chad Hill said. “Kyler Yancey was able to close the door there in the seventh. It was a good game to be in those types of situations early.”

Crapo went 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs while Tuckett went 2 for 4 with a double, a triple and an RBI for South Fremont (3-0), which hosts Bear Lake on Friday in a doubleheader.
