Blackfoot moves to 3-0; March 17 baseball roundup

At Ammon, a pair of three-run innings late in the game helped propel the Blackfoot High School baseball team to an 8-4 win over Hillcrest on Friday afternoon.

The Broncos scored three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to erase an early 1-0 deficit. All eight Blackfoot runs came in the games final four innings.

“Today was the first time we have been behind all season,” Blackfoot coach Liam Pope said. “But I liked the way we played and we got good pitching. It was a solid day at the ballpark.”

George Sebena led the Broncos at the plate going 2-3 and driving in three runs from the cleanup spot. Cole Baler added two more hits and an RBI.

“The power part in our lineup did their job today doing what they are supposed to do,” Pope said. “Our leadoff guys got on base and the 3, 4, 5 guys got big hits and drove in runs.”

Blackfoot got a solid day on the mound from a trio of hurlers inluding seniors Pacen Hayes and Sebena.
Austin Shirley and Michael Patterson each had doubles for the Knights. Alex Cortez and Owen Hobbs each had an RBI for the home team who was playing a game for a third consecutive day.

Blackfoot (3-0) opens up 4A District 5-6 play on Friday at Skyline while Hillcrest (3-3) is off until March 28 when it hosts Pocatello.

MADISON 8, SKYLINE 0: At Melaleuca Field, a quintet of Madison pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout in a 8-0 over the Grizzlies.

Starter Matt Bolingbroke went two innings and did not surrender a hit while striking out five on just 28 pitches, 22 of which were strikes. He also added a double and scored two runs at the plate.

After scoring two in the first and two more in the third the Bobcats plated four runs in the sixth on Derek Crawford’s double, a Matt Hansen single and a groundout by Codey Christensen.

Carson Lott managed the only two hits for the Grizzlies as just six batters reached base the entire game.

Madison plays at Highland next Friday, while Skyline (1-2) hosts Blackfoot the same day.

TIMPANOGOS (UTAH) 4, BONNEVILLE 1: At St. George, Utah, Bonneville’s offense struggled Friday in a 4-1 loss to Timpanogos, Utah, during the second day of the St. George tournament.

Thomas Alexander pitched 5.2 innings and scored the Bees lone run in the game. Randon Hostert went 2 for 3 at the plate.

Bonneville (4-3) plays Pleasant Grove, Utah, today in St. George.

SOUTH FREMONT 8, MARSH VALLEY 7: At Arimo, it wasn’t a normal score line, but South Fremont got a run in the top of the seventh to defeat Marsh Valley Friday.

The Eagles scored seven runs on just three hits, taking advantage of walks and hit batters to score in each of the first three innings.

“They really got to us in the second inning and took advantage of some walks and got down some bunts,” Cougars coach Chad Hill said. “But we got really good pitching from Reece Yancey in the last four innings to earn the win.”

Yancey came in relief of Carson Hansen and held the Eagles scoreless over his 4.1 innings and did not allow a hit. He also chipped in a triple and three RBIs at the plate.

Blake Bartschi went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI for South. Carson Crapo went 2 for 3.

SHELLEY 12, MALAD 10: At Shelley, the Russets held off a late rally to a earn a 12-10 win over the Dragons in a game that featured 22 runs and 24 hits.

Shelley led 9-2 heading into the fifth inning when Malad scored six runs to cut the deficit to one.

“It was just one of those innings were things got away from us,” Russets coach Wally Foster said. “We tried to nibble at the corners too much and the guy on the mound didn’t get much support behind him. Malad is a good team and they showed how the battle today.”

In the bottom of the inning, Shelley got RBI hits from Gary Gallup, Corey Killpack and Austin Wattenbarger to pad the lead.

Gallup went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and four RBI for the Russets. Killpack added two hits and three RBIs.

Shelley (2-0) hosts Bear Lake today.
