Hillcrest goes 2-0 to start Idaho Falls baseball tournament

At the Idaho Falls baseball Tournament, the Hillcrest Knights single-A American Legion team started the weekend 2-0, beating the Utah Trappers 8-1 before beating Skyline in five frames, 19-7. 

Against the Trappers, the Knights scored five runs in the bottom of the second frame and held on to win game one of Friday’s doubleheader. Hillcrest scored eight runs on eight hits, as Utah scored just one run on seven hits.

Luke Patterson went the distance on the mound, striking six out on 102 pitches. Bracken Mason went 2 for 3 at the plate with two doubles.

Against Skyline, Hillcrest routed the Grizzlies thanks to a 12-run third inning. The game ended in five innings, as Hillcrest led 19-1 heading into the fourth inning.

Jace Taylor and Dallin Weatherly both finished with doubles, the Knight’s only extra base hits in the win.

Kempton Motes and Chandler Robinson finished with two hits in the loss.

SKYLINE (A) 9, MADISON (A) 2 (6 INNINGS): In Skyline’s first game of the day, the Grizzlies’ single-A sqaud beat Madison 9-2 in six innings.

The Grizzlies took an early 4-0 lead after the second frame, as Keaton Cushman went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with three RBIs. Kempton Motes, Logan Taggart, Chandler Robinson, Colton Cushman and Braden Owens all finished with two hits.

The Grizzlies finished with 14 hits during the win.

POCATELLO 6, IDAHO FALLS (A) 5; IDAHO FALLS (A) 5, BONNEVILLE (A) 3: At the Idaho Falls tournament, the Tigers split their doubleheader, losing by one run to Pocatello before holding off Bonneville in game two.

Against Pocatello, Pocatello scored two runs in the top of the seventh and closed the door on Idaho Falls, in a mostly back-and-forth affair.

Jaxon Sorenson went 2 for 4 at the plate, as the Tigers recorded five hits and four errors.

Against Bonneville, Idaho Falls scored two runs in the top of the five to break a 3-3 tie before closing the door on the Bees in the final frame.

Both teams garnered eight runs, but Braxton Ball and Sorenson’s run in the top of the fifth were enough insurance to help the Tigers win.

Eliot Jones, Nate Rose, Ball and Sorenson had two hits at the plate. Bonneville finished with eight hits in the loss.

HELPER (UTAH) 6, BLACKFOOT (AA) 5 (8 INNINGS): At Minico, the Blackfoot double-A American Legion team lost a close one to Helper, losing in eight innings during game one of the Minico tournament.

The Broncos took a 5-4 lead heading into the fourth frame and held onto the lead until Helper scored one run in the bottom of the sixth.

After being held scoreless in the final five frames, the Broncos had a chance to break the stalemate with the bases juiced in the top of the eighth following back-to-back walks. But they could not add a run, as Joe Maddox flied out to short stop to end the inning.

Helper then won off a walk-off ground ball RBI to push the Broncos to 1-3-1 this summer.

Bensom Isom went 1 for 3 at the plate with a double. Emerson Stucki finished with 117 pitches and six innings pitched. He struck six out, walked three, allowed 11 hits and gave up two earned runs. He had two wild pitches.
