Hillcrests sweeps Madison, April 13 baseball round up

At Ammon, Hillcrest High School baseball swept Madison during Friday’s doubleheader, 11-1 in game one and 21-10 in game two, to stay competitive within 5A District 5-6.

After Hillcrest surrendered a run in the top of the first of game one, starting pitcher Jace Hansen’s command tightened to give the Knights the victory. Hansen allowed two hits while walking two and striking out five in six innings. Alex Cortex went 3 for 4 with three RBIs while Koby Sorenson went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and one run scored.

Both teams frequently crossed home in game two, but the Knights did more often.

After Madison scored three in the top of the first, Hillcrest knocked in nine runs and never trailed again. Sorenson went 3 for 3 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored while Jaxon Weatherly went 3 for 3 with two RBIs.

For Madison, Matt Hansen and Jaden Schwab finished 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored while Hansen added three RBIs.

The two teams meet again Monday in Rexburg.

SKYLINE 7, POCATELLO 6: At Skyline High School, the Grizzlies scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and held the Indians scoreless in the final three frames to clinch a crucial conference win.

Cruz Taylor closed the door on the mound, striking out one and walking another in his only inning pitched. He finished 2 for 3 from the leadoff spot with three RBIs. Austin Charboneau started for the Grizzlies, allowing five runs and seven hits while walking four and striking out seven in six innings pitched.

Mason Jacobsen went 1 for 2 with two runs scored for Skyline (8-5, 5-0 4A District 5-6), which plays a doubleheader today at Pocatello.

BLACKFOOT 8, RIGBY 2: At Rigby, Blackfoot garnered a nonconference win thanks to solid pitching and early offense.

Blackfoot led 6-2 after the third frame. Juan Pimentel controlled the mound during his three innings pitched, allowing just one hit and struck out one batter.

Joseph Maddox went 2 for 3 for Blackfoot which hosts Pocatello on Thursday. Peyton Boudrero went 1 for 3 with two RBIs for Rigby, which hosts Madison in a doubleheader on Tuesday.

SUGAR-SALEM 12, BEAR LAKE 0; PRESTON 5, SUGAR-SALEM 1: At Preston, Sugar-Salem split its doubleheader Friday, beating Bear Lake in five innings before losing to Preston in six.

Sugar-Salem scored 12 runs on four hits and Tanner Harris finished 2 for 3 with an RBI with two runs scored against Bear Lake. Hayden Crapo was solid on the mound: one hit, one walk and four strikeouts in four innings pitched.

Sugar-Salem’s offense couldn’t muster up much against Preston, finishing with just two hits and committing three errors. Caleb Norman went 1 for 2 with two RBIs for Sugar-Salem (5-5), which plays today at Firth.

MARSH VALLEY 9, SOUTH FREMONT 4 (6 INNINGS): At Preston, Marsh Valley handed South Fremont its first loss of the spring.

Down 4-1 after the third inning, South Fremont got as close as 5-4 after scoring two runs in the top of the sixth. Marsh Valley then scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Reece Yancey went 2 for 2 at the plate while Garrett Tuckett and Alonzo Gonzalez both finished with an RBI.

South Fremont beat Madison’s JV team 12-2 to end the day. The Cougars play a doubleheader today in Preston.
