Idaho Falls Bandits: Alexander hired as new head coach

The Idaho Falls Bandits, a Double-A American Legion baseball team, announced Ryan Alexander as its new head coach Wednesday afternoon in a press release.

Alexander was selected and hired by the Bandits’ board of directors to replace former head coach Joldy Watts.

Watts, who coached the team since 2007, was recently hired on as Utah Valley’s pitching coach for this fall. Alexander previously worked with Watts during his tenure with the Bandits and at Bonneville High School.

“We were pleased to have a group of terrific candidates to choose from,” the press release said. “Ryan presented a strategy for continued success in our programs and emphasized his desire to take an active role in supporting our players who wish to play at the next level to get recruited. He brings a wealth of baseball knowledge and has previous experience with the AA Bandits as he has served as an assistant coach for the past two seasons.”

Alexander is also the head baseball coach at Bonneville. As Bandits’ head coach, he will be in charge of selecting the 2018 team compiled of four different area schools including Idaho Falls, Hillcrest, Skyline and Bonneville.

“Mike Whyte, the president of Idaho Falls American Legion Baseball worked thoroughly with each school, gathering input and recruiting candidates for this position,” the press release said. “It is our goal to serve each school in our program well. We know that Ryan will dedicate himself to work with all the area players with equal zeal.”

The Bandits are coming off one their most dominant runs this previous summer, finishing 46-6 and reaching the state Double-A championship. The Bandits lost 3-2 in 10 innings to Lewis and Clark.

During the past decade, the Bandits went 240-49 (.830) under Watts. They also won two state tournaments and qualified for the American Legion Double-A Northwest Regional Championship Tournament in 2012.
