Shelley holds Bear Lake to two hits in 8-3 win; March 18 baseball roundup

At Shelley, Peyton Whitaker and Gary Gallup had a big day in the Shelley High School baseball team’s 8-3 nonconference win over visiting Bear Lake.

Whitaker started on the mound for the Russets, giving up two earned runs on no hits while walking eight and striking out three in three innings of work. He was equally strong at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a double, a triple, an RBI, four stolen bases and two runs scored. Gallup pitched four innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits while walking two and striking out six. He went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored.

“Peyton really hit the ball well and that got the win for us,” Shelley coach Wally Foster said.

Cordell Shurtliff went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a stolen base for Shelley (3-0), which is off until a March 28 game at Firth.

PLEASANT GROVE (UTAH) 12, BONNEVILLE 4: At St. George, Utah, Bonneville was outhit 14-6 in a nonconference loss to Pleasant Grove, Utah, in the final day of the St. George Tournament.

The teams were knotted at 1-1 through two innings before Pleasant Grove took a 7-1 lead in the top of the fourth with a one-out, three-run home run by Ty Lewis. The Bees cut the deficit to 8-3 as Thomas Alexander scored in the bottom of the sixth off a fielder’s choice, but Pleasant Grove stretched its lead to 12-3 in the top of the seventh with a one-out grand slam into left field by Jaxon Brown.

Dalton Virgil lead Bonneville at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh and two RBIs while Jordan Perez went 1 for 2 with a stolen base and Randon Hostert went 1 for 1.

The Bees (4-4) host 5A District 5-6 opponent Rigby in a 4 p.m. game Friday.
