Small pitches Diggers into 3A semifinal; May 18 state baseball roundup

McCall Small, was anything but small in his complete-game shutout of the Tigers. He allowed just five hits and struck out nine to earn a 6-0 win and help propel his team into today’s semifinal round.

A pair of walks to start the bottom of the first started a rally that eventually plated three runs for the Diggers.

Curtis Drake’s RBI double to left field drove home Grady Rasmussen, who had walked to lead off the inning.

Small followed with an RBI infield single and a sacrifice fly later gave the Diggers a 3-0 lead.

That’s all the runs Small needed,. but the Diggers added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth for insurance.

Drake led the Diggers at the plate, going 2 for 4 with the double and RBI. Cody Overson added a double and two RBIs.

Sugar-Salem takes on Fruitland at 7 p.m. today in a semifinal game at Treasure Valley Community College.

Class 5A

TIMBERLINE 11, MADISON 0 (6 innings): At Borah High School, the Madison Bobcats sent ace Matt Bolingbroke to the mound in the opening game of the 5A state tournament against Timberline, and for two innings Bolingbroke was able to hold Timberline in check.

But the Wolves exploded for four runs in the third and scored in each of the last four innings on the way to a six-inning win.

The Wolves struck for the four runs in the third when Connor Riddle doubled to lead off the inning. He scored three pitches later on a single from Jonah Hultberg.

Two walks, two singles and an error later, the Wolves led 4-0.

Madison could not catch up to Timberline starter Layton Wagner, who allowed two hits during his five-plus innings on the mound.

The Bobcats recorded just three hits in the game, but stranded nine men on base thanks in part to five walks.

Riddle had three doubles for Timberline at the plate. Madison was led by Cyson Orr, who went 1 for 3.

The Bobcats will play Lewiston in an elimination game at 10 a.m. today at Capital High School.

Class 3A

BONNERS FERRY 10, TETON 1: At Ontario, Ore., for five innings the Redskins and Badgers were even in their 3A state tournament opener. But a nine-run sixth by Bonners Ferry blew the game open and sent the Badgers into the semifinals with a win at Treasure Valley Community College.

Austin Wilhite got the Redskins on the board first in the fourth inning with an RBI double that scored Bridger Joslin, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

That was all the offense Teton would muster in the game.

Seven different Redskins players got hits in the game and Anthony Bleggi pitched four strong innings, allowing no runs and striking out four.

Teton takes on Kimberly in an elimination game today at 10 a.m.
