South Fremont’s offense carries in doubleheader sweep, April 14 baseball round up

At Preston, the South Fremont High School baseball team’s bats were hot early and often, sweeping its doubleheader by a combined score of 28-0.

South Fremont beat Malad 10-0 before beating Firth 18-0.

Against Malad, Reece Yancey controlled the mound and the plate. He struck out 11 batters in six innings pitched and hit two home runs for five RBIs. He finished game one 2 for 5 from the plate. Kyler Yancey also had a solid day at the plate, finishing 2 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs.

Against Firth, the Cougars won in five innings thanks in part to Alonzo Gonzalez’s grand slam. Gonzalez finished 1 for 2 and crossed home plate twice.

German Gonzalez went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs. Firth finished the day with five hits.

South Fremont (14-1) plays Tuesday at Shelley. Firth (3-8) hosts Declo Tuesday for a doubleheader.

SKYLINE 12, POCATELLO 11; POCATELLO 10, SKYLINE 8: At Pocatello, Skyline’s seven-game winning streak came to end after splitting a conference doubleheader with Pocatello.

Tailing 11-9 after the sixth frame during game one, Skyline scored three runs in the top of the seventh to stay undefeated in conference play.

Skyline’s bullpen of Dustin Parkinson and Cruz Taylor closed the door on Pocatello in game one, as Tim Orgill went 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs. Kempton Motes also hit a double and finished with two RBIs during the late win Saturday.

Pocatello finished with 10 hits, including Quinton Standley’s home run against Parkinson. Both teams committed five errors.

In game two, the Grizzlies received its first loss in conference play after the Diamondbacks took a two-run lead in the bottom of the fifth and held on.

The D-Backs notched two more hits (12-10) and committed one less error (2-1) during the win. Nick Layland led the Grizzlies offensively, going 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs. Orgill went 3 for 4 during the loss.

SUGAR-SALEM 9, FIRTH 6; MALAD 8, SUGAR-SALEM 0: At Preston, Sugar-Salem split its doubleheader, beating Firth before losing to Malad.

During game one, Sugar-Salem won late, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh to hold off Firth for a nonconference win.

A 5-3 game heading into the top of the seventh, the Diggers added on five runs before Firth scored three in the bottom of the inning.

The Diggers’s offense was led by Kyle Ostermiller, Jace Hansen and Caleb Norman, who all finished with two hits.

The Cougars committed eight errors during the loss.

During game two, Sugar-Salem was blanked after its three hits could not culminated into runs. The Diggers committed four errors.

For the Dragons, they scored eight runs on eight hits and did most of their damage during the third and fourth frames.

Sugar-Salem hosts Snake River Tuesday. Firth is scheduled to host Malad Tuesday.
