Whitaker no hits Firth, April 11 baseball roundup

At Firth, Shelley High School baseball pitcher Peyton Whitaker almost threw a perfect game during a 7-0 win over Firth.

Whitaker allowed no hits while striking out six and walking one in seven innings pitched. Of his 80 pitches, 53 were strikes. He also finished 2 of 4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs. The Russets scored three runs in the first, two in the fourth and two in the top of the seventh.

Austin Bateman went 3 for 4 with an RBI for Shelley (5-3-1), which hosts South Fremont on Tuesday.

Firth’s Ben Park took the loss, allowing eight hits and five earned runs while striking out three during 3.2 innings pitched.

CENTURY 7, IDAHO FALLS 3; IDAHO FALLS 3, CENTURY 2 (8 INNINGS): At Melaleuca Field, Idaho Falls split a conference doubleheader Wednesday evening.

During game one, Century took a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back. The Diamondbacks outhit the Tigers 9-4 and held I.F. to their fewest runs in any game thus far this season. Nate Rose went 1 for 3 with an RBI to lead I.F. in game one.

I.F. salvaged the split in game two, scoring Zack Bridges off a walkoff walk by Cabes Woolf in the bottom of the eighth.

Paul Wilson went 3 for 4 while Andrew Gregersen showed solid command on the mound, allowing one earned run on seven hits and striking out 11 in seven innings pitched.

“Andrew Gregersen threw a terrific game on the mound, he was challenging hitters and kept us in that ball game,” Idaho Falls coach Pat Lloyd said. “I was proud of the way our guys went out and competed.”

Idaho Falls (8-4) plays today at Century.

CHALLIS-MACKAY 5, WEST JEFFERSON 1: At Terreton, Challis-Mackay stayed undefeated after beating West Jefferson on the road.

With wind gusts causing multiple pop-ups and fly outs, Garrett Millick controlled the game on the mound. He finished with 15 strikeouts, per coach Ryan Millick.

“Pitching carried us,” Millick said. “And our defense played solid when we had to.”

Jed Torgerson brought in West Jefferson’s only run, driving in a base runner on a bunt. Game stats were not available as of press time.

Challis-Mackay (7-0) hosts Gooding at 1 p.m. Friday.
