‘Cats, Diggers reach consolation finals; March 2 boys basketball roundup

At Nampa, the Madison High School boys basketball team won a 82-71 barnburner over Boise in the 5A state consolation bracket to keep its season alive another day.

Staggering stats defined the game, which the Bobcats led 35-17 at halftime. Madison scored 20-plus points in three of the four quarters, including a 25-point fourth quarter. The Braves responded from their double-digit halftime deficit with a big second half, scoring 54 points and shooting 41.5 percent compared to a 26.3 field goal percentage in the first half. Madison finished the game with a field goal percentage of 66.7 percent.

A total of 62 fouls were called Friday—36 against the Braves—resulting in a 34-for-54 foul shooting performance for Madison. Seven players fouled out, including five from Boise.

Spencer Hathaway had 19 points, Joe Dougherty had 14 points and eight rebounds and Brigham Williams had 12 points, four rebounds, one assist and two steals for Madison (20-4), which will play Centennial at 10 a.m. today at Columbia High School for the 5A state consolation trophy.

SUGAR-SALEM 61, TIMBERLAKE 43: At Meridian, the Diggers preserved their season with a dominating win over Timberlake to advance to today’s consolation final.

The Diggers maintained control in a game that featured only one lead change. Sugar-Salem led 27-19 at halftime and led by as much as 21 points and finished the game with a field goal percentage of 44 percent. The Diggers also owned the boards, outrebounding the Tigers 39-19.

Chandler Pincock had 16 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals while Dan Shirley added 11 points, five rebounds and one assist for Sugar-Salem (21-8), which plays Kellogg (18-4) at 9:15 a.m. today at Meridian High School for the 3A consolation trophy.

COLE VALLEY CHRISTIAN 46, NORTH FREMONT 44: At Boise, Cole Valley edged North Fremont in a 2A state consolation bracket game to end the Huskies’ season.

The contest featured eight lead changes and five ties. The Huskies led 26-23 at halftime before being held to six points in the third quarter. While both teams recorded several boards Friday, the Chargers outrebounded the Huskies 43-35.

Garrett Hawkes had 15 points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals before fouling out while Chris Hansen had 13 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals for North Fremont, which ends the season 13-14.

The Lumberjacks built a 45-28 halftime lead was 11-for-20 from 3-point range Friday. Garett Snider, who finished with a game-high 28 points, was 7-for-10 from 3.

Jacoda Whitworth and Chase Green had 10 points each to lead the Miners, who end the season 18-9.
