Fruitland edges Sugar-Salem 45-42 to begin 3A state tournament

MERIDIAN—The Sugar-Salem High School boys basketball team was a Dan Shirley deep 3-pointer away from taking Fruitland to overtime Thursday in a 45-42 loss in the opening round of the 3A boys basketball state tournament.

The contest at Meridian High School was a back and forth battle. The teams traded baskets in the first half and Fruitland led the defending 3A state champions 20-19 at the half.

Tom Baldwin led the Diggers with six points at the half, Kyler Handy had five and Pasen Michaelson scored four. Jacob Richins led the Grizzlies with six points.

The teams traded baskets in the third quarter, which ended with a 34-28 Fruitland lead.

Fruitland made a run at the beginning of the fourth quarter to take a significant lead.

The Diggers made a fourth-quarter push led by Chandler Pincock and Pasen Michaelson.

With about five and a half minutes left, Michaelson made two free throws after being fouled on his way to the basket then took a charge on the other end.

Fruitland then stretched the lead back to nine. The Diggers made timely fouls, Fruitland missed their free throws and the Diggers made a couple shots to get within three.

Fruitland made another basket to make the score 44-39 with 40 seconds to play.

Hadley Miller hit a huge three in the corner to get the Sugar within 2 with 22.7 to play.

Michaelson drew a foul on the next possession, fouling out, to send the Grizzlies to the line. Fruitland made the first and missed the second but got the rebound, allowing them to run off more time.

With 10.5 left, Pincock nearly got the steal then fouled. Fruitland missed both.

With seconds left, Shirley released a shot from ten feet behind the 3-point line and missed.

Tom Baldwin added eight points for Sugar-Salem (20-8) will play Timberlake in the first round of consolation games Friday at 3 p.m.
