Hillcrest, Blackfoot advance to title games; Oct. 9 district boys soccer roundup

At McCowin Park, Jordan Martin scored a pair of goals and Seth Redd added a goal and two assists as the top seeded Hillcrest High School boys soccer team earned a berth in the 5A District 5-6 championship game after a 4-0 win over Highland.

“It was a very solid outing,” Hillcrest coach Bryan Johnston said. “We had some nerves and made a few adjustments, but the boys played well today.”

Redd got the Knights on the board first in the 28th minute on an assist from Martin.

Six minutes later Martin scored his first goal on an assist from Isaac Child. Hillcrest led 2-0 at halftime.

Jessie Arellano scored the Knights first goal of the second half in the 42nd minute on an assist from Redd. Martin scored his second goal in the 61st minute with another Redd assist setting up the goal.

“I told the boys after the game to have a clean slate going into Wednesday,” Johnston said. “Wednesday is what we have been playing for, we need to remain humble.”

The Knights will host Rigby for the district championship Wednesday at 4 p.m. at McCowin Park.

RIGBY 3, MADISON 2: At Rigby, a late second half goal broke a 2-2 tie and sent Rigby into the 5A District 5-6 championship game with a 3-2 win over Madison.

“It was a good effort,” Trojans coach Bart Mower said. “We had to battle. Hats off to Madison, it’s hard to beat a team in three consecutive games.”

The two teams had played in the season’s last two games before Monday’s semifinal. Rigby won every meeting.

“We capitalized on a corner kick for a first goal and the second goal was just some good hustle by my team,” Mower said.

Madison rallied to tie the game at 2-2 before the half, but Rigby scored midway through the second half to earn the win.

The No. 2 seed Trojans play at top-seeded Hillcrest on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Madison will host Highland in an elimination game on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Rexburg.

4A District 5-6 tournament

BLACKFOOT 4, PRESTON 2: At Blackfoot High School, Coque Velasquez and Daniel Martinez each scored a pair of goals to lead Blackfoot to a 4-2 win over Preston and advance to the 4A District 5-6 title game.

“It was a war,” Broncos coach Liam Pope said. “It was a very physical game, an ugly win, but a win none the less.”

Blackfoot fell down 1-0 in the game’s first 19 seconds as Pope said his team came out flat.

The Broncos will host Century in the district title game on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Blackfoot. This is the third consecutive season the two teams will meet in the title game. Century has won the last two district crowns.

Preston will take on No. 2 seed Idaho Falls on Wednesday at the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex.

CENTURY 4, IDAHO FALLS 1: At the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex, Century’s Jesus Ledezma had a hat trick in the Diamondbacks’ 4-1 win over Idaho Falls.

“We played well for the first 25 minutes and carried a 1-0 lead,” Idaho Falls coach Ryan Cook said. “After that I couldn’t say what happened. The boys lacked tenacity and it cost us.”

Century takes on Blackfoot for the district title, while Idaho Falls will host Preston in an elimination game also on Wednesday.

“I told the kids championship teams always respond,” Cook said. “We will see how they respond on Wednesday.”
