Tri-Valley ends Butte County’s playoff run

At Cambridge, the Butte County High School football team’s playoff run ended with a 20-0 loss to Tri-Valley in the 1A Division II state semifinals.

It was the second consecutive state semifinals appearance for the Pirates, who had not been shut out since the 2013 1A Division I playoffs against Hagerman.

Butte County coach Sam Thorngren said Tri-Valley, the No. 3 ranked team in the final 1A Division II media poll released Oct. 31, had size advantage over the Pirates, who had hoped to rely on speed. Thorngren added that significant rainfall before the game created a slick field.

“Our team’s effort, I can’t fault that one bit,” Thorngren said. “It was so slippery and muddy. They’re just big and strong. They did a good job of running right at us. We run the ball a lot, but we get the ball on the outside perimeter. It was just a frustrating night.”

Keyan Cummins rushed for 72 yards on 19 carries while quarterback Brett Waymire rushed for 40 yards on 10 carries and completed one of seven passes for 14 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Kalib Hawley also had 20 tackles and two sacks for Butte County, which ends the season 8-2. The Pirates graduate five and will be moving up to 1A Division I next year.

“I’m proud of our seniors,” Thorngren said. “We’ll be a pretty mature team next year. We start a lot of sophomores. The biggest difference between 1A DII and 1ADI is depth. Strategy won’t really change.”
