Eastern Idaho’s No. 1 source for prep sports

Undefeated conference record puts Ririe into 2A ranks of first girls media poll of 2018

After almost a year, the Ririe High School girls basketball team is back in the 2A ranks of the Idaho high school girls basketball state media poll.

The Bulldogs attained the No. 3 spot in 2A in the first poll of 2018 released Wednesday, ahead of conference foe Firth, which remained at No. 5, and District 3’s Cole Valley Christian at No. 4.

Ririe, which graduated seven from last year’s 2A state championship team, entered Wednesday a 4-0 start in Nuclear Conference action and on a 12-game win streak. West Jefferson, previously ranked No. 3, was among 2A teams receiving votes this week after consecutive conference losses to Firth and Ririe.

Sugar-Salem was also rewarded in the first poll of the New Year. After splitting first-place votes down the middle with two-time defending state champion Timberlake in the previous poll, the Diggers received eight of nine possible first-place votes Wednesday. Sugar-Salem entered Wednesday on a 10-game win streak, including wins over Burley and defending 4A state runner-up Bishop Kelly. Snake River remained in the No. 3 spot for another week.

Bonneville, which went 2-1 at the TimberLion Tournament in Boise in December and is 4-0 in 5A District 5-6, went from No. 3 in the previous poll to No. 4 this week. Borah, previously tied for No. 5, is the new No. 3.

Blackfoot, which is off to its best start in recent memory, was among 4A teams receiving votes this week.

Defending state champion Butte County, currently undefeated in conference play, maintained its perch atop the 1A Division II ranks. The Pirates received seven of nine first-place votes.
