Diggers hold off Russets; Sept. 12 girls soccer roundup

SUGAR-SALEM 3, SHELLEY 2: At Shelley, Sugar-Salem handed Shelley its first loss to a 3A District 6 opponent since 2014.

The teams entered halftime tied at 1-1. In the second half, the Diggers scored two unanswered before Shelley made it a one-goal game late. Brittney Baron scored Shelley’s first half goal while Abbey Crandall scored in the second half.

Shelley coach Jim Gregory said Sugar-Salem, like the Russets, brings back several experienced players this season.

“There were some occasions where they were just quicker in execution than we were,” Gregory said. “That’s something that kinda hurt us. We paid the price for that.”

Shelley (6-1-0, 2-1-0) plays Thursday at South Fremont while Sugar-Salem (5-0-0, 3-0-0) hosts Firth on Thursday.

TETON 3, FIRTH 0: At Driggs, Teton’s Haley Janus had a hand in every aspect of Teton’s conference win over Firth.

The freshman center midfielder assisted Sofie Graupner on a 15th minute goal and Caitlinn Koch on a 30th minute goal and scored off a Kira Wise assist in the 42nd minute. Teton coach Sandy Buckstaff said he put her in at sweeper—her position from club soccer—toward the end of the game to give a teammate a rest.

“She’s all of 5-foot even and 105 pounds, but she’s a dynamo,” Buckstaff said.
Teton (4-2-0, 2-1-0) plays Thursday at North Fremont.
