Highland beats Bonneville, wins ninth district title in a decade

Traditions change but sometimes the outcomes remain the same.

The Highland High School softball team is atop the 5A District 5-6 totem pole — again — after beating Bonneville 5-3 Thursday at the Bonneville Sports Complex.

The district title is the Rams’s third straight and ninth in 10 postseasons.

“I think it’s just a tradition of Highland to be district champs and they didn’t want to be the team that blew that I guess,” Highland coach Tisha Coverdell said. “So with that, I think it’s always been important for Highland to be district champs … so I think they took some pride into this last game.”

This time around, though, Highland took an nontraditional route. The Rams went through the losers bracket — losing to Bonneville a few hours earlier before beating Rigby and Bonneville — to enter next week’s 5A state tournament with District 5-6’s No. 1 seed.

Highland also won away from Halliwell Park, the first time the Rams played outside of Pocatello for a District tournament since 2015.

But whether it’s in Pocatello or Idaho Falls, Highland softball continued its dominance in large part to sophomore Makayla Mauger.

Mauger relieved starter Shylee Mann two outs into the fourth inning and showed solid command inside the circle. In 2.1 innings pitched, she allowed just one hit against the Bees. At the plate, she finished 1 for 3 with an RBI single to score Jordan Frasure.

For the Bees, who earned the District 5-6 No. 2 in this year’s state tournament, junior Aly Radford kept the offense a float. Down 3-0 in the third frame, Radford hit a double to center field to score Liv Lemons.

Two frames later, she hit a solo home run over the Bees’ center field wall. It was the last time Bonneville scored, as Mauger grounded out Ashley Hathaway for the game’s last out.

“We told the kids: our goal was to get to the state tournament, and we did that,” Bonneville coach Dennie Edwards said. “We live to fight another day.

Edwards added that he was glad his team “battled” in a rematch of last year’s 5A District 5-6 championship. The Bees left nine runners, five in the first two frames, stranded.

“It’s just a game of inches sometimes. Like I said: proud of my kids. Proud of my coaches,” Edwards said. “We’re happy still.”

Bonneville begins the 5A state tournament against Eagle next Friday at 11 a.m. at Capell Park in Chubbuck.
