Idaho Falls gets furthest in program history, May 18 softball round up

BLACKFOOT — The Idaho Falls High School softball team made history Friday, advancing to game 11 of the 4A state tournament — the furthest the program has ever reached.

After losing 2-0 to Ridgevue in the opening round, Idaho Falls beat Twin Falls 10-8 and Pocatello 10-6 to meet Vallivue in an elimination game.

The two teams play today at 10 a.m. in a loser out. The winner plays the loser of Middleton-Ridgevue in a third-place game.

“Our offense stepped up,” Idaho Falls coach Traci Wilkinson said of the Tigers coming through the loser-side of the 4A bracket. “We had good pitching. We had all the elements moving.”

In game one, Ridgevue shut out Idaho Falls after Kendall Pena crossed home place twice for the Warhawks.

Idaho Falls Alex Billings and Kennedy Burton had valiant efforts inside the circle, holding Ridgevue — last year’s 4A state runner up — to just five hits.

Billings pitched a perfect game into the third frame, as Pena was the Warhawks’ first base runner. Billings finished with four hits allowed and two walks inside the circle before Burton took over in the bottom of the fifth.

The Tigers’ scoring opportunities lied with Jaidyn Clements, who was left stranded on third and second at two different points of the game. Clements finished 2 for 3 during game one, as the Tigers closest run came in the top of the sixth.

“We just weren’t seeing the ball,” Wilkinson said. “That’s where your game is going to come. If you don’t have the hitting, you’re not going to win. Simple as that.”

Their second state tournament berth since 2005, Billings said the Tigers came in as “underdogs”. They embraced that role in games two and three, collecting 25 combined hits during the wins.

After Twin Falls scored one run in the opening frame, the Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the frame and never surrendered its lead.

Against Pocatello, Idaho Falls won out in eight innings thanks to five runs in the top of the eighth.

“We kinda know we’re viewed as the underdogs in the tournament, and we’re not expected to do well,” Billings said. “But we know we’re a good team and we know we can play so we want to show what we can do.”

“We want to show that they can compete with these Boise schools,” Wilkinson said. “We’re taking it one at a time.”
