Snake River defeats Sugar in 3A softball play-in

The wait was worth it for the Snake River High School softball team.

The Panthers knocked off Sugar-Salem 10-5 on Monday at Blackfoot High School to earn the final spot in the 3A state tournament. The game was scheduled for Saturday but delayed by rain.

Snake River wasted little time taking command, scoring one run in the second, five in the third and three in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Maycee Brown led the charge, going 4 for 5 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs. Savanna Martin added two hits in three at-bats while scoring twice, and Kenya Leavitt was 2 for 5 with two doubles and a run scored. Anna Larsen went 2 for 3 with a home run and got the win in the circle.

Sunny Bennion was 4 for 4, Lia Gibson was 3 for 4 and Mady Handy was 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs to lead the Diggers.

The Panthers will open the 3A state tournament against Homedale at 11 a.m. Friday at Bonneville High School.
