Bobcats, Rams claim 5A District 5-6 tennis team titles

The Madison High School boys and Highland High School girls claimed team titles at the 5A District 5-6 tennis tournament, which concluded Friday with championship matches at Tautphaus Park.

The Bobcats finished with 65 points to earn a comfortable 11.5-point win over second-place Hillcrest. Highland was third with 27 points, Bonneville was fifth with 20.5 and Rigby was sixth with 2. Highland’s girls edged Hillcrest 53-51.5 for the team title, with Bonneville a close third at 49.5 points. Madison was fourth with 16 points.

In boys singles, top-seeded Kyler Hartman continued his dominating season with a win over Madison’s Tim Jack in the final. Hartman has one loss in two varsity seasons. Hillcrest’s Tyler Cannon beat Madison’s Luke Richards in the consolation final to also qualify for next week’s state tournament. The top four finishers in each event qualified for state.

Madison’s top-seeded duo of Mitch Blanchard and Joseph Duque claimed the boys doubles title, beating Hillcrest’s Brock Taylor and Bowen Oswald in the final. Madison’s Christian Packer and Cameron White won the consolation title.

Hillcrest’s Olivia Warner and Emma Schweinsberg won the girls doubles title, beating Highland’s Joslyn Benson and Julie Harrison in the final. On the consolation side, Hillcrest’s Taelor Anderson and Nicole Griggs beat Bonneville’s Scha’leigh Davenport and Jessica Donahoo in the final.

In girls singles, Highland’s Chloe Stoddard topped Bonneville’s Sage Leishman to win the district title, while Bonneville’s Maunayia Harrigfeld topped Hillcrest’s Cassidy Nelson in the consolation final.

In mixed doubles, Highland’s Carter Fellows and Brittany Grigg won the title, beating Bonneville’s Sam Andrus and Sami Trane in the final. And Hillcrest’s Kade Cornelison and Alyssa Bullock won the consolation title with a victory over Madison’s Holly Facer and Nathan Gehmlich.

The 5A state tournament is scheduled for May 19 and 20 at Timberline High School, the Appleton Tennis Complex at Boise State University and Julia Davis Park. Play begins at 8 a.m. Friday. All championship matches will be played at BSU at approximately 2 p.m.

4A District 5-6 tournament

Results from the 4A District 5-6 tournament played Friday in Pocatello were not available at Post Register deadline. They will be published in Sunday’s sports section.
