Regular season track reaches end of the line at city/county meet

Bluebird conditions made for personal bests, school record attempts and multi-event winners as the regular season concluded Friday at the Idaho Falls city/county meet at Thunder Stadium.

Idaho Falls High School sprinter Laurel Taylor went 2 for 2 Friday, winning the girls 100 meters in 12.66 seconds and the 200 later in the afternoon in 25.69. Taking second and third, respectively, in both races were Hillcrest’s Ara Omotowa and Bonneville’s Sade Williams in the last meet the three would compete against each other.

“They’re fun,” Taylor said. “I like talking to them before our events. It’s always really calming. In volleyball, you don’t get to know the other teams that well. In track, you can get really nervous in between events and it gets really chatty. You get to know a lot of people that way.”

Friday gave Taylor her fastest time of the season in the 200, an event she is thus far undefeated in this spring. She has also won all but one 100 race she has been in this spring, and her time of 12.34 on April 14 put her as No. 1 in 4A and in a tie for No. 1 among all classifications with Rocky Mountain’s Dena Shaffstall-Lassos in Idaho’s athletic.net rankings.

Taylor credited Barry Johnson, who is based in Shelley but also works at Ellis Physical Therapy, and his strength and conditioning regimen for helping her attain those times and motivating her to move up the medal stand at state track. Her best individual state finish thus far in her career was third in the 100 and 4×200 last year.

“I think I’ve really improved from last year,” Taylor said. “Last year, I had a slump. I really want to get first or second in the 100 and 200 at state.”

Friday also brought farewells, particularly for the seniors, who competed against athletes from the three other city schools and against athletes from different classifications for the final time. Everyone separates next week for district meets.

For Taylor and Williams, both juniors, that meant the 200 was their final race together against Omotowa, with whom they’ve traded victories with the last three years.

“It’s really sad,” Taylor said. “I’m definitely gonna miss Ara next year.”

Several other athletes won multiple individual events Friday: I.F.’s Katie Montgomery (girls high jump, triple jump and long jump with personal bests in long and triple jump) Bonneville’s Colton Reifschneider (boys 100 and 200), Skyline’s Zedekiah Davis (boys 110 and 300 hurdles) and Skyline’s Daniel Helsley (boys shot put and discus).

A bit of deja vu occured during boys pole vault, which Hillcrest’s Brayden Denney won by clearing a personal best 14 feet. He then requested the bar to be raised to 14-7 in attempts to break Hillcrest’s school record of 14-6. That record was set almost exactly a year earlier at the final regular season meet at Thunder Stadium by his older brother Austin and teammate Dalton Dopp.

“That was one of my first thoughts … ‘My brother got his PR at this meet here last year. Maybe it’s gonna be a good day for me,’” Denney said.

According to Idaho’s athletic.net rankings through Friday evening, Denney is Idaho’s lone sophomore boy pole vaulter to clear 14-0 this season. Denney said he followed Austin into pole vault, and he is already ahead of where he was as a sophomore.

“He’s on his mission right now, but he emails me and tells me to smash his record,” the younger Denney said.

Also among the numerous athletes to get a personal best Friday was Skyline freshman Sariah Harrison, who won the girls 1,600 in five minutes, 26.30 seconds. She wasn’t the only runner in blue celebrating after the race either, as teammates Adria Roberts and Elizabeth Harrison, Sariah’s older sister, also ran personal bests.

“That was really exciting,” the younger Harrison said. “It’s kinda crazy track is almost over.”

The reigning 4A girls individual state cross-country runner-up, Harrison has had multiple opportunities to test herself in her first high school track season. Arguably one of the biggest tests was last week at the Tiger-Grizz Invitational, where she was the lone freshman in the varsity girls 1,600 and placed third in the 3,200.

“It’s definitely a learning experience,” Harrison said. “I like good competition. At Tiger-Grizz, when they told me there was a varsity girls mile and freshman mile and wanted to know which I wanted to do, I said varsity. I didn’t have to think about it. I’d rather PR than win.”

Skyline swept the city/county team titles, accumulating 117.5 points to claim the boys title and 93 points for the girls title.
