Eastern Idaho’s No. 1 source for prep sports

2014 All-Area Volleyball Coach of the Year

The 5A volleyball scene changed profoundly across Idaho this season with a handful of Boise schools moving up to the classification and longtime 4A powerhouse Bonneville joining 5A District 5-6 to make it a six-team conference.

Although 5A District 5-6 doubled in size from what it was three years ago, two bids were up for grabs for the 5A state tournament in Idaho Falls. Regular season conference matches were as competitive as coaches anticipated, and the top three teams were separated by one game leading into the regular-season finales.

Idaho Falls, which had lost to Bonneville and Highland in the regular season, went 4-0 in a 5A District 5-6 tournament filled with upsets to repeat as district champion. The loaded district proved to be ample preparation for state, where the Tigers defeated Rocky Mountain, Vallivue and Coeur d’Alene (twice) to win their fifth state title in program history and under head coach Wendy Johnson.

“She has done such a good job of building her program,” Skyline coach Ceanna Larson said. “This year she did a good job of keeping her kids together. They were consistent all through districts and state. They really stepped up and earned it and a lot of that has to do with Wendy.”
