Challis sweeps Clark County; Sept. 1 volleyball roundup

At Challis, upperclassmen and underclassmen alike contributed to Challis High School’s 25-7, 25-12, 25-19 sweep of Clark County in volleyball action Tuesday.

Seniors Abby Sensabaugh and Chantelle Schwenke had nine and six kills, respectively, while fellow senior Savannah D’Orazio had 21 assists. Sophomore Laura Parkinson added seven kills.

“We had everybody contributing to the scoreboard with good serving and good hitting,” Challis coach Debbie Sheppeard said. “We want to see our ball control improve as the season goes on.”

Challis (1-0) hosts Watersprings and West Jefferson tonight.

SOUTH FREMONT 3, WEST JEFFERSON 0: At Terreton, South Fremont swept West Jefferson in a nonconference match 25-16, 25-22, 25-16.

Raquel Torgerson, who has coached West Jefferson softball for 18 years, is now coaching Panthers volleyball. Torgerson said South Fremont’s Harlee Speth was hard to stop and she saw numerous positives from her team’s first match of the year.

“We’re trying to get the energy going in our team,” Torgerson said. “In the second set, we played really well, but just fell short.”

West Jefferson (0-1) plays a tri-match with Watersprings and Challis tonight at Challis.

SALMON 3, BUTTE COUNTY 2: At Arco, Salmon rallied from a first-set deficit to beat Butte County in a nonconference marathon match, winning 11-25, 25-21, 27-25, 24-26 and 15-10.

The young Pirates feature just one senior and one junior, and coach Jody Coburn was pleased with the effort.

“We felt like we did alright against probably one of the better teams we’ll see this year,” she said.

Senior Maisy Smith led the attack while sophomores Tausha Cummins (setter) and Conlin Coburn (libero) played well.

The Pirates play at Ririe today.
