Eastern Idaho’s No. 1 source for prep sports

District 6 proposes to separate from District 5 in 4A for 2018

The 4A conference in eastern Idaho will have a new look beginning in 2018.

After meeting for roughly two hours Monday morning at Blackfoot High School, Hillcrest athletic director Wendy Johnson said the District 6 teams that will compete in 4A starting in fall 2018 — Bonneville, Hillcrest, Idaho Falls, Skyline, Shelley and Blackfoot — will not join Districts 4 and 5 to form a conference, an option previously considered.

For the upcoming cycle, which goes from 2018-2020, the three 4A schools in District 5 — Preston, Pocatello and Century — will potentially combine with the six 4A District 4 schools, Johnson and Skyline AD Bill Cairns said. Districts 5 and 6 have combined their 4A schools to form an athletics conference since 2012.

The plans have yet to be finalized, Cairns said, and the schools will meet again Wednesday morning.

“That’s where it looks like its heading,” Cairns said.
