On Tuesday, the Idaho Falls Police Department will host a ribbon cutting of its new complex.
The ribbon cutting will occur at 1:30 p.m. at the new facility at 775 Northgate Mile. The Idaho Falls Police Complex is the department’s first standalone facility; it has shared buildings with other departments in the past.
The IFPD moved into its previous location at the Bonneville County Law Enforcement Building in 1978, expanding throughout different buildings. In all, the department was fragmented between eight different buildings, with staff at six locations.
According to a press release, the department’s fragmentation negatively affected its ability to be accessible to the public, solve crimes and address public safety needs in the city.
In 2019, a citizen review was conducted by the IFPD Evaluation Citizens Committee, which unanimously recommended the city pursue a new and consolidated facility.
The city of Idaho Falls purchased the Idaho Livestock Commission property in 2019 as the future home of its police department. According to the release, the location was suitable due to its costs, proximity to high-crime areas and potential impact on redevelopment in the area.
In 2020, the city searched for an architectural firm to design the new facility, which was awarded to Architects Design Group and NBW Architects. In 2022, the city awarded the project to Ormond Builders.
The total budget for the new facility is $30 million, and it was funded through certificates of participation.
These certificates allow investors to purchase them and be repaid over time through lease revenues. This allows the city to fund the facility while keeping taxes from increasing for its residents.
Construction was completed recently, and the IFPD moved into the new facility over the past few weeks. The lobby will be accessible between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. IFPD can also be reached at any time by calling its dispatch line at 208-529-1200.
Community members are welcome to attend the ribbon cutting, which will take place at the main entrance on Tuesday, April 23rd at 1:30 p.m., the release said. The Idaho Falls Police Honor Guard will conduct a flag raising ceremony, raising the national, state, and city flag for the first time at the complex. Idaho Falls Mayor Rebecca Casper and Chief of Police Bryce Johnson will also share remarks.
Community members are invited to tour the complex and to see and hear first-hand how the facility will enhance police services in the community. Tours must be scheduled in advance and can be requested on the Idaho Falls Police Department website.
