The Museum of Idaho has been announced as a finalist with 14 other museums and 15 libraries for the National Medal for Museum and Library Service from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The medal recognizes museums and libraries for impacting communities and service excellence. The institute will announce the winners in May with representatives of the museums or libraries at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The Museum of Idaho, if selected, would be Idaho’s first museum to win this medal.
The institute has been honoring museums and libraries with awards for 30 years. Over 200 institutions have been recognized since 1996.
Three libraries in Idaho have won this award in the past: Boundary County District Library in Bonners Ferry in 2002, Weippe Public Library and Discovery in Weippe in 2011, and Meridian District Library in 2019.
“This nomination is extraordinarily meaningful for us,” Executive Director Jeff Carr said. “We’re an independent grassroots organization in a small metro area, and this national recognition from an esteemed source is further evidence that we’re doing something right. We’re excited to share this recognition with all east Idahoans and help give them yet another reason to be proud of where they live.”
The Institute’s Acting Director Cyndee Landrum said the finalists have showcased an ability to be involved with the community and preserve its diverse history and culture.
